I thought this when I first heard the song but hesitated to commit to this thought. But does this song rank up there with their top joints??? After a year of hearing it about 1000 times...I am going to say yes. I also think its pretty cool it came out basically 30 years into their existence as being a band....amazing accomplishment.

Yeah, it's pretty damn good. It's definitely up there for me. Loved it since the drop. The biggest grower for me is Nonstop Disco Powerpack. That is some classic shit. Yauchs verse is immaculate. Wish I could have seen both of these performed.

This, specifically, gives me the damn chills:

I'd listen to the records and they'd inspire
Sit down to write and the pen breathes fire
Construct a rhyme with specific intent
Flowin' from the brain cells, right through the pen
And then I put the book down, grab ahold the mic
Words flowin' so cold, turn water to ice
Come through the wire, saturate the tape
You put me in the mix, nice it up with the plate
And then they press it on wax, sell it in the store
The DJ spin the record out on the dance floor
Comin' through the speakers to shake your eardrum
Brain cells get lit, then you hear where we're comin' from

Back on track though....singling out my favorite single line of LBTF....it's gotta be:

On the mic I spit, the match it's lit

Even if I'm driving or whatever and not rapping along I will ALWAYS rap that lyric. Man, I'm bout to put some bboys on.

Long Burn is my favorite track off Hot Sauce.

Great tune to sing along with in the car. Would have been awesome to see them perform it live. It's a bboy classic that fits right up there with pass the mic and root down.

Long Burn has Long Been my #1 track off HSC2 since the snippets were released in April 2011.

remember when we all thought it might have been a Yauch solo joint?

so when I'm feeling sad, I put in LBTF and say something corny to myself like "talk to me Adam," and then MCA just brings it with his powerful intro into the song...

if only we knew what they are saying in the hook. because it sure doesn't sound like "the truth shall set you free"

Really, Remy? It sounds like it to me. They just scratch out the words "fire" and "free" a lil bit.

Sometimes I love to just read the lyrics.. makes the song that much more amazing.. for me.

Love Long Burn. Everytime I think or hear the song it reminds me of their longevity as a band and that their musical flame will burn forever.

The Troll 2 reference is een cooler in my book because I like to think it is also a Spider-Man [Sam Raimi] reference. "Jump out the window onto a parade balloon" as in the fight between Green Goblin and ol' Web Head in the first movie during the parade scene.

I never thought the parade balloon line as a Spidey reference, certainly possible.
Although I don't recall them referencing super heroes much. More Star Wars, Star Trek, Blade Runner type stuff. (Strictly as far as fantasy/sci-fi references go)

Great song. I wanted to doubt the claim of it being in their upper tier of tracks, but it's plenty good.

Since this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AobEReFjtlA) is the only song which could have been thought to be the source sample - and obviously isn't - maybe they in fact recorded some weird-ass song with vocals at some point and they're sampling themselves on the 'hook'.

Stranger things have happened (and lots of the HSC samples seem to be completely fictitious). It would be like how Sure Shot samples the Vibes. But probably not.

Another weird piece of speculation from me and my weird pieces of speculation is a niggling curiosity as to whether or not MCA's verse on the song is as originally recorded or not. Over time I've started wondering whether this got a re-work when they went back into the lab.

Of course, there's no way of saying for sure. Just saying.

EDIT: I really like that it becomes apparent that the bassline is somewhat live around the 3:12 mark.

Just wanted to throw this tidbit into the mix - NYC music critic Robert Christgau dropped a LBF reference in his 1994 review of Ill Communication. Peep it.

Ill Communication [Grand Royal, 1994]
Another you-gotta-believe record, just like Check Your Head--only less so, thank God, whose appearances herein are frequent and auspicious. Although once again it's short on dynamite, at least it starts with a bang. Two bangs, actually, one hip hop and one hardcore--their loyalty to their roots closely resembles an enlightened acceptance of their limitations. With each boy having evolved into his own particular man, the rhymes are rich and the synthesis is complex. You-gotta-love the way the ecological paean/threnody emits from a machine that crosses a vocoder and the p.a. at a taco drive-through, but their collective spiritual gains peak in the instrumentals, which instead of tripping up the Meters evoke the unschooled funk of a prerap garage band. If they've never run across Mer-Da's Long Burn the Fire, on Janus, maybe I could tape them one? A-

I can't believe not one sample has surfaced yet. Except for the bar kays holy ghost sample in funky donkey and even for that one I am just guessing.

I've also wondered this. Not just for Long Burn but other songs as well.

It's a Spider Man reference.

Honestly, I don't think the makers of spider man were the first people to envision or show someone jumping onto a parade balloon. I know I've seen the image elsewhere and pre-spider man but I can't place where.

without ever thinking about Spider Man, I always wanted the line to be a reference to jumping on a float at Mardi Gras and subsequently being arrested.

yeah- I can't hear the truth will or shall set you free in the hook or chorus or whatever. of course I hear the "Long Burn the fi-ya-ya-ya-er" part...

they bring it so hard on this. Mike D calls his shot straight up in his opening line about retiring their numbers to the rafters...

The moment I heard the beat come in and MCA come on "This is it y'all, some nasty shit" and Mike " Bring It!" during the playing at the MSG boombox video I knew it we gonna be killer.

All 3 of their verses are amazing it's like how good Professor Botty parts were.

They all killed it, but Yauch was top of his game.

" So step back, and check yourself
This MC'S got weapons that'll ruin your health
So if you're feeling strong then reach for yours
My book is my shield and my mic is my sword "

Love that.

Yes, you are correct. The lyrics don't say "hello my name is MCA and for the next two lines I will be rapping from the perspective of a Goblin who jumps onto a parade balloon so that I can more clearly define that my style is iller than the Goblins in the second Troll Movie."

Jumped out of a window onto a parade balloon/ my style is iller than the goblins in Troll 2.

You are saying that Spider-Man 2 did not create the idea of jumping off of a parade balloon, a valid point. I am simply suggesting that since he is in fact referencing Goblins in the second line, I like to think of the two lines as being connected. Deepening the absurdness a little bit by double referencing movie "Goblins". It's not a huge stretch.

Definitely one of the best Beastie Boys tunes for me, and that's saying a lot.

Are there any other spider man references in other Beastie Lyrics? I can't think of any. If there was I would be more convinced.

I agree with whoever said its good that they still made tunes like this after thirty years but i think there are other slightly similar tracks on other albums that are better. I'd say its at the bottom of my top 5 off HSC2

This is one of favorite joints since Prof booty because it is so raw. How about Adrock's line:
Now, it's Ad Rock rappin I'm back again
Like a Big Mac attack on your gut, and it's wack my friend
I'm a maxer relaxer and I'm chillin
I take that shit serious like Jerome To Grillin
I burn you to a crisp sucker back up off the toaster
I make you sick like a Kenny Rogers Roaster
See this rap thing is all about the the braggadocia
I check my rearview, emcees ain't gettin closer
People think I'm slow, cause I'm just I'm underchallenged
See me you're like "Man, that's remarkable talent"
Live 'round the clock like Disco Donut
I'm like a tailer cause I got the thing sewn up
Or a proctologist I move asses

Got so much heat that I fog your mom's glasses
Proof is in the pudding and the pudding's in my pants
You heard me rap and now watch me dance

All respect to Yauch of course but Adrock's is def nuts!
