Are live in September. Has anyone heard if MTV has any tribute planned?

My sources say that MCA will be mentioned, but there will not be a sprawling tribute segment.

my guess is they say nothing then at 2 am after it is over MTV will officially announce that the award show is in MCA's honor.
I use to love watching videos on MTV 20 years ago, I cant believe MTV is still around. Last thing I saw on MTV was the first episode of the Osborn's.

I would like to stay up & see what MTV considers music this year, but I have more pressing matters. I'm not too convinced they'll have some sort of tribute to MCA.
WesleyOHSnaps!

All good points. I doubt they'll do anything.
I did just go on demand on my tv and in the MTV channel they have the VMA Channel with the 2012 Nominies and a whole channel dedicated to the beastie Boys videos.
Everything from Make Some Noise to FFYR. So that's something

AAARGH. A friend of mine who works with the MTV networks got us invites of some sort in June because she knows how much I love the Beastie Boys and thought for sure there would be a tribute. So, I'm going to LA and every day I hope to read an announcement of a tribute and instead realize I'm clueless about this event.
Fingers crossed there is something!

i used to get so excited about the video music awards. there's a lot of good shit out there, but the stuff they choose now is mostly garbage.
i still kinda like seeing the graphics/themes they think up, the visual design of the show, etc. nothing like the heyday but still aight.

i watched it on ustream or livestream or something last year
i'll be very surprised if they don't do yauch right

I didn't know that Jim Shearer was a regular VH1 host. I knew of him from his Beastie-related stuff, like his podcast. Shows how often I even bother to watch "music television" anymore...
I agree with him on this. A lot. I wonder what they'll do.

So apparently he got some mention before a commercial. A lot of fans are visibly upset. What should I say? I should have known Mtv could care less about a rapper who changed the world through his music and humanitarian work. Apparently that will never be enough. They are more worried about what Nicki Minaj wore to the show.
So anyway some fans say fuck it who cares, Mtv sucks....... but as I said on twitter even SPIN.COM said it would be COLD of them not to do anything big for the man...

I was flipping back and forth (god, the music of today's youth is hideous). Right after Green Day played and the show went to commercial, there was a photo montage of Yauch, up on the big screen, and a clip of "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" played. It wasn't much, but at least they acknowledged him. It made me sad, remembering the VMAs, when Green Day played right before the Beastie Boys did Sabotage, on that rotating stage.
You really shouldn't care about this show, it's irrelevant.
JoLovesMCA
09-06-2012, 08:39 PM
Well without bitching on and on. What I would have liked to see might have been them playing various clips of him from previous award shows, his SPEECHES... showing the audience that yes one point in time an artist got up there and interrupted their good time to speak about something important.
And then they could end it with the photo of Yauch standing by their MTV award that actually sat in a pile of junk on top of the fridge at the lab. ;)

You must be joking. MTV put up a 1 hour special almost immediately after Yauch's passing and regularly aired it. And the MTV website had great articles in tribute to him for months afterwards. You gotta give credit where its due. MTV has shown Yauch love for real. I, like everyone else here, haven't paid attention to MTV in a very, very long time. But MTV always supported the Beastie Boys, from the beginning to the end. I don't understand how you could be realistically upset about this. I think your expectations were a little unrealistic, particularly when taking into account age.

Are you joking? That tribute they threw up on the day he passed was a joke. Sway is their worst vj and he obviously had no clue what he was doing or who he was talking about. It was a sad attempet.
The award show could of been great cause they had time to plan, but they did drop the ball.

No, I'm not joking (but since I don't watch MTV, I wouldn't know who their worst vj is). I wasn't saying the special they did was flawless by any stretch, but I thought it was sincere. And I think to expect a 5 minute tribute on a show like the VMA's, whose target demographic is 12 to 19 year olds, is a bit naive. I thought the little tribute they did was fine, all things considered. And I deeply love MCA more than any artist, ever.

I was there, and I was disappointed they didn't do something real (especially since my friend who got us tickets is involved with MTV, etc., and thought for sure they would do something -- the reason we went). They had the short montage and picture of MCA.
With that said, there weren't very many "genuine" moments in the show, and while I think it is wrong that they didn't do something, I'm not sure MTV could do him justice during the VMAs as they are so slick and produced -- and it's not like they do videos anymore. And, other than Green Day, who else was really there who didn't focus on teens.
Like most of us, I miss him way more when I hear the music, and not sure MTV of this era gets it.

Honestly, I didn't lose any sleep over it. I've read tons of posts from fans on facebook and twitter who were really upset about it so i am far from the only one who expected more! But they didn't and trust me I will get over it. Mtv is dead to me for a long time now........ People are mainly upset because there was a lot of news outlets reporting something BIG. It didn't happen so yeah people felt let down. that's it.

As some have said its not really the platform to be giving out tributes, it was a really uninteresting badly produced bit of telly, uneventful and vacuous. The host was god awful, was he meant to be a comedian? He made Russel Brand look like Lenny Bruce. I don't really get how a magazine or a award show has any meaning or anything to add really to people's personal subjective feeling of loss, I'd rather see a graffiti tribute scrawled up on a wall or something coming from someone who they've influenced or motivated, new creative shit. Feel its a waste of passionate energy to be concerning too much.

I think we are giving MTV as an entity too much credit. Yauch wasn't a crackhead. He wasn't smacking bitches up. So, today's MTV could care a less.
Also, to say that the VMA's wouldn't be used as an outlet for a memorial of whatever sort is incorrect. They did a full video montage for Amy Winehouse followed by Bruno Mars performing one of her songs last year.
That being said, I figure if it weren't the "homage" they did do, it would have been some Beiberesque Beastie tribute. That shit would have had me locked up.

Well is it really necessary to beat each-other up for this? I get why people don’t care and I get why some do. There isn’t any need for this to turn violent. Yauch wouldn’t want that. I bitched a little, I’m over it. I’m not dwelling. It is what it is.

And I knew you were waiting for me to make some comment so that you can find a way to attack me. I’ve been through too much this year personally and on this board to really let petty remarks like that bother me anymore.
Btw I am sure Yauch, Mike and Adam would be proud of all of your posts here so keep it up, you're doing great!
Edit: Interesting what news sites are saying. I read this from thespec.com
Also noticeably absent from the event was any mention of the late Whitney Houston, whose career helped define the network in the 1980s. Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, who also passed away this year, at least earned a perfunctory tribute as the show cut to commercial.

Was that really necessary to say that? You my friend seem to enjoy whatever game it is that you play around here. Knowing that Jo was getting negative feedback for her comment already, did you really have to try to make it worse for her?
I really don't understand the level of intolerance among a bunch of adults just because they do not agree with what someone else is saying?? Why can't people just ignore things they don't agree with?
If someone really rubs someone else the wrong way, go into your user control panel, scroll down to ignore list, input their user name and be done with them. You will never have to read another word of what that person has to say.
But for those of you who just like to bitch about every little friggin thing under the sun and try to be comedians at others expense, I don't know what to tell you.

I kind of felt like I was watching the Teen Choice awards last night. The show was staged brilliantly but the entertainment, didn't entertain me at all. The whole time my 16 year old daughter sat there saying "this was the best VMA ever!"
To me, Green Day looked old and sorta out of place. I'm sure more than half of the people there and watching we're like "who is that?" when they put up MCA's picture. It's very sad but we have all grown up, MTV has just moved onto the next generation :(

You really shouldn't care about this show, it's irrelevant.
While I can agree to that at a certain extent, what MTV is now, is not what it used to be. What they should have done was pay respect to a man that was part of a band that made that channel what it was back in the day. What they did was disrespectful to MCA, the Beastie Boys and all the fans who remember how it used to be. My guess is all the young idiots that now work at MTV don't remember or respect it's roots. Way before Kanye, Nathaniel was interupting speeches. I will never forget the Boys playing Sabotage at the 1994 VMAs. AdRock was PISSED!!!! Miss and love you MCA. My continued gratitude.

The MTV that was around during the most prolific years of the Beasties (for lack of better term, to me they've always been prolific) has not existed for quite some time. I honestly find it impressive that he got even a montage, as the MTV of today cares nothing about music, or videos. Why they even have a VMAs is beyond me.
The biggest recognition that could be given to the BBs and to Yauch is honestly the recognition that he gets from the folks around here, and the folks around the world. Yea, MTV would have been a bit classier to do more for an artist that brought them viewers and cash, but the token they have to offer is nothing compared to the love that we, the real fans have to offer.
I personally am content with the fact that nothing that MTV could have done would EVER outshine the love that I have for our 3 MCs.

I don't have a problem with the youth wanting to have their own musical icons. I guess if Adam was alive I wouldn't care so much. The band would be out there doing shows for their fans and nobody would give a fuck! For those with opposing opinions, I really appreciate that because when you debate without attacking you help others see something they might not have before. Some of ya'll are right, they really wouldn't have a damn clue who he was! Makes me think of last year when all of the actors from FFYR Revisited busted on stage and people in the audience were like WTF. They laughed but I still don't think they got it!
Even without a proper tribute I know Adam's legacy is in tact. His ways, the Beasties way will never be done again. Part of that makes me sad but I guess it makes them that much more special. People will look at Adam Yauch's track record and say damn never again.
The kids today aren't all that lost. So many seek out the Beastis and discover their greatness all on their own!

why does mtv have a video music awards when they dont show videos anymore? shouldnt they be having a reality crap awards show?
You've got to remember alternative music was really popular in the 90s to 00s, and MTV's audience has changed to people who watch reality TV it wouldn't mean anything if they did do something. I'm just glad they didn't get Kid Rock and some other rappers doing a bad impersonation like they normally do. the only thing I'd want to see is something coming from the rest of the band themselves or from the same creative pool of thought, not going to happen.
