i don't follow him especially closely but every time i see him he makes me happy

i just love his unbridled enthusiasm for everything he talks about. he's like that teacher you had in high school that made you give a shit about a subject for once in your stupid teenage life, only for grown-ups

I have some of his lectures on my Ipod. "the most astounding fact" is great on the subways.

he recently obliterated the notion that the phrase "once in a blue moon" is actually a rarity.

it happens once every 30 months, or 2.5 years.

he also explained to Jon Stewart recently that the Daily Show Globe is spinning in the wrong direction.

But that still makes it something of a rarity, no? It's predictable and it's regular, but it's not something that happens so very often. "Once in a blue moon" doesn't mean something that never happens, or that only ever happens once in a lifetime, it just means something that happens occasionally. Like a 'rare find' in a junk shop, where you find something that is quite valuable amidst a load of rubbish - it happens, but not every time you go looking.

not really that rare, my friend. (http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2012/08/31/qa-a-once-in-a-blue-moon-chat-with-neil-degrasse-tyson/)
