Seriously.

Buzz Osbourne clearly doesn't like Beastie Boys' music - that's fine, it's not for everyone. But to go on and criticize them for being socially conscious? That's just being a total ass. Beastie Boys grew up and matured, and in doing so tried to raise some awareness about causes important to them, and actually do things to help people...whereas this guy seems to prefer to spend his time name-dropping and stating his strong opinions on musicians in a way that suggests his views should be revered as empirical fact. Sounds like a bitter douchebag to me. (n)

Weren't the Melvin's trying to set some world record recently or something? I'm not even going to read that story. But if the Melvin's are trying to set a world record- and bring attention upon themselves, what's the difference between that & bringing attention to causes one supports? Selfishness, IMO.

Yeah, I like the Melvins a lot, too. I think it just comes down to some people not being hip hop fans and not being able to really listen to the music well. I hear so much shit from otherwise smart people about how bad hip hop is and none of it makes any goddamned sense. How often do you hear people talk about how much they hate rap and then throw out one or two specific examples of artists they dislike as proof that the entire genre is bad? No other musical genre is judged solely by the worst of what it has to offer. If someone said to you: "Jazz music is awful. It's just boring, repetitive, easy listening crap. Look at Kenny G!" you'd know they had no idea what they're talking about, but people do this with hip hop ALL THE TIME.

As far as I'm concerned, if you don't like hip hop, if you aren't a fan, if you don't know the good and the bad and how it's evolved over time, I don't care what you have to say about it. You don't know shit.

UPDATE: Listened to some of the Warlock Pinchers. They're horrible. Truly horrible. Worse than the Bloodhound Gang. It's not even hip hop.

as bad as they may be, they were also fun [based off the three songs I heard]. All Buzz is saying is that they were being Beastie Boys before Beastie Boys were Beastie Boys. And he's right. Based off the timeline and the song subjects. That doesn't mean Beastie Boys ripped them off, and at the end of the day who fucking cares what Buzz from The Melvins thinks? he helped put Nirvana together and they stole their big riff from fucking BOSTON of all bands.

I'm glad he said this shit because I now know of a new [old] band who [sort of] helped shape punk rock hip hop. Also they are better than Bloodhound Gang.

All Buzz is saying is that they were being Beastie Boys before Beastie Boys were Beastie Boys. And he's right.

I'm not so sure about that. First of all, that's not all he was saying. He also said the Beastie Boys are Warlock Pinchers for Dummies. He also misidentifies the Beastie Boys as some exaggerated version of the Licensed to Ill caricature. He should know better than that.

And were they Beastie Boys before the Beastie Boys? Looks like they started recording music after Licensed to Ill was released.

Anyway, it just sounds to me like Buzzo doesn't know anything about hip hop and probably doesn't even particularly like hip hop. If that's the case, his opinion on what is or isn't good hip hop means shit to me. I mean, the Warlock Pinchers sound a lot more like the Melvins than they sound like the Beasties.

I think between the lines that is what he is saying. Calling them a dumbed down version of another band is at least insinuating the smart version came first. Also he calls them "PUNK ROCK" so it's not even a hip hop thing. But all I was trying to say is who cares what this fella thinks about the Beastie Boys? He obviously didn't give them a single thought past the first Ill. That's his loss not ours.

Time to set the record straight. Beastie Boys always had a social conscience. For example Yauch participated in no nukes demonstrations before he was even in a band, in part because he went to Brooklyn Friends, a Quaker school with solid values of social awareness and conscience. For Buzz to suggest that their social conscience was an act after LTI is atrocious and his ignorance of history is unfathomable. Before their hardcore days it could be argued that the Beasties had a social conscience. If anything was an 'act' it was the shadier personas developed around LTI. It is so obvious that Buzz should know better. Not passing the background checks, what a grade A moron.

Or, he's not a super fan and he doesn't know them backwards and forwards like us. He shouldn't be running his mouth if he doesn't know what he's talking about. But he doesn't care, so why should we? I'm actually glad I know who the Warlocks are now. Their Morrisey song is hilarious.

Melvins rock! This guy is a douche.

Melvins are great and all because Buzz is a creep does not take away from that. Now that I think back perhaps Buzz was always an asshole with a twisted sense of assuming if a band was enjoyed by the masses then the band must be flawed somehow. I used to think similarly that popularity meant that there must be something wrong with the target of interest.

I like the Warlock Pinchers as well and it is a shame more people did not like them. There were probably a variety of factors that caused that. But to diss the Beasties this way is not cool.

Well they started in 1981. Obviously Beastie Boys were doing their thing just a bit before that. From Buzz's perspective, pre-internet, pre-Beastie Fame the Pinchers were doing their thing first and/or at the same time.

We obviously both agree that the Beastie Boys preceded them, but I think they preceded them by much more than your approximation. According to their discography, your about 6 or 7 years off. And that's the only realistic measure to go by.

The oral history I linked to says they started doing their thing and playing shows in the early 80's. I'm not going to read it again to find the date. Whatever date I wrote the first time is probably accurate. rah rah Beastie Boys rule. Buzz sucks. I know. I'm sorry for trying to look at this from both sides.

Whenever a so-called Hip Hop group (which is what Buzz seems to be framing the pinchers as), especially a white one claims to come from the early 80's they damned well better have at least a couple credentials (especially when you suck as hard as the pinchers do and are from Denver of all places). These guys are lacking, I had more credibility as an 8 year old in the burbs rappin' in my bathroom mirror (I can find the date for ya on that if you want it. Every performance). You're letting (better?, lol)them take liberties with the timeline.
But who knows with a guy like Buzz Osborne thinks. He probably really hates Hip Hop (though he's too "cool" to come out and say that) and surely knows nothing about it.

Exactly my reaction, perfectly expressed.

All I ever think of when I hear the name The Melvins is that Kurt Cobain liked them and he had good taste so I tried to listen to them but they fucking sucked. And that guy's hair is the most ridiculously annoying hair ever. Imagine being friends with him - you'd constantly be thinking "Can you just get rid of that FUCKING hair, dude? Since the two years are well up (http://articles.latimes.com/1994-04-27/news/mn-50966_1_beastie-boys) Adam H should 'kick' Buzz's ass for in part disrespecting Yauch by implying that for even a second the band's social consciousness was an act.

Please note: I do not want Adam to resort to physical violence against Buzz. Osborne is not worth it, although perhaps his hair and shitty attitude should be written about in a new BS 2000 track. I can almost hear it in my head.
