MCA was a dude who was having a great time with music and hip-hop and then became a dude who was having a great time with music and hip-hop from a more mature standpoint where he wanted to see it change the world. He gave his all. –Chuck D

That quote pretty much sums up my exact feelings on Adam and the band.

I really like what Chuck D had to say about hip hop today. He said Jay Z was a good person but doesn’t like who he works for. Are rappers now more interested in the image rather than the message? I guess that can be said about any genre of music but do you agree with him?

Rappers should just be able to perform what they create and satisfy the people that like and love them. Now, rappers perform and give a half-assed show, or don’t even show up to all the areas that they’re magnified. I hate the majors. I like Rick Ross as a person. I like Jay-Z and Kanye West as people. But I hate the companies that they record for. I hate the radio stations that play 100 percent national-sponsored hip-hop music. And I hate Viacom for being a fucking one-trick pony. They’re the major, dominant TV company. BET is a part of Viacom. They think that just because they own BET, they can buy and sell black people at their whim. Put my HATE in capital letters.

Just curious since so many of you here know a lot of about hip-hop...

I agree with him 100 percent. One of the reasons I love the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy is because they never became commodities. It might be old-fashioned to still believe in the idea of not selling out, but I think you have to at least respect it. Chuck sued St. Ides for sampling his voice in a malt liquor commercial (1 Million Bottlebags). [By the way, St. Ides had some amazing commercials with Wu-Tang, the Geto Boys, Ice Cube, and others and I love those too.] The Beasties sued British Airways over Cookie Puss. Either of them could've just gotten paid, but wanted to shut it down instead. I think what Chuck is saying is that the straight up commercialization of art is a wicked thing and any art that is primarily or entirely commercial is a lie at best and possibly even intentionally bad for you.

Great quote!

I don't always agree with Chuck D. But, I respect him as a complete artist and his commitment to Hip-Hop.

I still listen to all the PE records to this day. The Bomb Squad are a huge influence on how I make beats.

Side note: I was disappointed when Chuck sued DJ Premier and The Notorious B.I.G.'s estate over The 10 Crack Commandments. I thought it was poor form to sue a deceased artists family.

Side note: What the hell is up with Flavor Flav? Looks like he's about to do 6 years!

I agree. I mean I agree with the fact that so much of it is commercialized. And yes good hip hop or music in general will find its audience, but I guess my complaint is that they are probably working harder and not getting paid enough! Meanwhile the ones that Chuck mentioned just do whatever they want. Yeah so Chuck is right, it’s the people they work for that he despises!! Chuck D I don’t know, even if I disagree with him he is just one of those people that keeps it real. I like that. I didn’t realize Flav was arrested on domestic violence. I hate to hear that. Just googled it and damn that mug shot!

On the new Public Enemy album, The Evil Empire of Everything, MCA is sampled on the last track from the mtv awards warning that the United States of America should find non-violent ways to fix its problems.

I think it showed a lot of respect to MCA. The album ends right after MCA speaks his words. MCA with the last word on the new PE.

Wow, 2nd PE album release this year, right?

(and 2nd with a Yauch reference too)

Yes, 2 albums in one year. Both have MCA samples.
