Now that I'm in the "advanced" portion of my comedy schooling, we are writing and producing an hour long live revue for the stage. We have a director and a cast. The students requested and/or were given production roles. And I'm pretty sure the kid who got assistant director just asked for it so he could put it on his resume because when the actors are running through scenes, he doesn't even watch, he doodles in his notebook pretending he's taking notes.
So far, so shitty. Now that this is actually real, he's like, "uhh, I don't have time to rewrite my god awful script because I have several other Creative projects going on" (yes, he capitalized "creative").
and when the director asked him to think of ways to rework his own scene, he says he just can't think about it, he doesn't have any ideas. And then when I pipe up with ideas, he treats me like I punched his grandmother. And NO ONE else pipes up. So I look like a dick.
I'm just complaining, I don't know what my point was. I'm just frustrated because getting people to work on this show outside of the hour before class is like pulling teeth. I feel like I should play politics and just keep my mouth shut, but why should I cater to a drama queen lazy bones? I've spent the last 10 months being pretty shy and honest about my anxiety issues with these people, but I think it might be time to bring out my bossy side.
orrr, I could just be quiet and get along with people until it's over. then work with people who actually care about doing a good job.
harumph.

I don't think you look like a dick but I also think you shouldn't have punched that guy's grandma...

I think the only thing for you to do is to punch the guy in the dick.

That sounds tough for sure. It can be difficult working with others. Sometimes I have to rely less on others at work (DIY) or keep super tabs on them otherwise things will not get done. Rather than getting too angry, I tell myself they must be overworked to the point of forgetfulness. This way I stress myself out less. This act of 'self-deception' keeps my temper in check. Probably does not work as well in your situation though. Hope things get better for you.

That actually helps a bit. I figure maybe people are just overwhelmed and need a mental break. And if this stuff is too hard for some folks and they have other things going on that are easier and/or more rewarding, I can see how they'd put this show on the back burner. I'm just not like that though, I half-assed when I could, and now I'm like, LET'S DO THIS! because now we have a cast depending on us, and a five week run that people are going to pay to see. Before it was like, oh lemme just write a bunch of bullshit about an alien and a dumb family and see if it works. Now it's time to actually make that bullshit palatable and funny to an audience.
anyway if the show sucks, I guess I just won't invite anyone. It's too racy for my mom now anyway. I already know all the parts she'll be pissed at. My sketch about S&M isn't helping.

You shouldn't let other people fuck up your passion. I vote for you taking a hard lined leadership role. This is your life and your dreams. You can make it happen if you work hard and don't let lazy, humourless people take control.

Don't listen to ToucanSpam. You should just be like "ah fuck it" and light up a fatty. Thats how I got through college.

I can tell you're not from Seattle. We're the best at avoiding confrontation.
Sorry. Didn't mean to fly off the handle like that.

Ha, well obviously I'm bad at confrontation too, hence I started this thread instead of actually talking to the people involved :o
Anyway, things are better now. The director was like "writers, sit in this empty room and make this work". So we did. I think some people just need a kick in the pants. 3 people were absent though :/

Sounds like they have issues that they need to work on, so don't let it effect you. Here are some options...
1) You can be wishy washy whine and not do anything about it.
2) You can be polite problem solver and say something like, I know you are too busy to work on this, so I will ask others to make the changes that we need. If looks offended, ask him, do you have time? Yes great fix it. No, sorry, but we need this fixed now, and walk away.
3) You could take the ultra bitch mode and challenege his manhood by telling him that you seen newborn babies with bigger balls than he has, and if had an eigth of respect, he would fix it right the fuck now. Then he can rub your feet.
4. LET US WRITE THE SCRIPT!!!!! It would be awesome! Is the cast set, or can we still have a casting couch? Are the actors(females) shy about on stage nudity? Can you get a fire permit before the opening date? How far is the front row from the stage? How much weight can the stage wires hold? And finally, do know where to get some detonators, I am all out?

Well all of this ended up fine. I did do a lot of the work and I probably would never work with some of the people again, but the actors were really great and the whole experience was awesome. Very fulfilling. I think I may have accidentally joined a cult.

That is great news, except for the cult part ;)
