That's a really well written tribute. I think a lot of critics feel like they have to attack or disavow Licensed to Ill personally, which is stupid, and this kind of downplays the importance of Mike and Horovitz, but it's still really good. Liked this especially: "Of all the things the Beastie Boys rendered cool by association... the idea that you could change, that in order to be cool you had to change, was the most important."

Yep. And this: "Why he owned a gun in the first place doesn’t matter; what matters is the look on his face when he breaks it, when he has ceased to be the person who owned it."

Our man’s at 2:31.

Wait til you hear the lyric they selected for him. I guess it’s an obvious choice, but it’s yet to be matched in terms of impact. I must have listened to it a million times but it still has the power to make my heart stop.

MCA is the youngest on the list (bar one). Ouch.

From the article:
"Even after he was given a diagnosis of parotid-gland cancer three years ago, the idea of a world without Ad-Rock and Mike D passing the mic to Yauch seemed inconceivable. It shouldn’t have been. Rock history — human history, really — is full of evidence that we’re not here long, that we should get our houses in order and do something of value with our time. The lesson of Yauch’s life was that it is possible to make that happen."

Good article, thx for posting.
Love the pic.
The Beastie Boys' background is more diverse than just Jewish (except for Mike), it would have been nice if the author acknowledged that. But the author is certainly not the first to make this factual error.

does everyone get TNYT Magazine with the weekend edition in their hometowns? I was thinking of asking each other for help securing copies for anyone who might want one.

Went to about 7 different newsstands this afternoon trying to find a copy. The problem is it's not sold separately as a magazine, it's included as an insert in the Sunday Times and nobody has the Sunday Times on Monday. If I figure out how to order back copies that include the magazine, I'll post info. Shouldn't be impossible. Anyway, happy new year. If you're driving, don't drink; and if you drink, don't drive.

My husband had the car on Sunday and spaced on hitting up Barnes and Noble for me. When I went at 10am on Monday, the old copies had already been picked up by the distributer. Long story short: after several phone calls and cold trails, I learned that our local paper also distributed NYT out of DC (apparently national papers are distributed by all sorts of random companies and our paper just happened to have this account) and got a cool lady in circulation to hook me up with a copy. It wasn't until I was in the car that I thought I should have asked her to give me ALL the copies. :(. I hope this helps somebody get ahold of one...

I don't think I'd ever heard this before:
Unfortunately, they had said that the album cover for “Check Your Head” had already been picked, and I said that I’ll try and outdo that. ... There was a picture of them sitting on the curb that we took at the end of the first roll, and I knew that was their shot, I knew that was their version of the “Salad Days” photo and it became the album cover, replacing the original one they had chosen.

Anyone know what the original image was?

Yeah it was good to find some more info. I think whoever transcribed the Select article (http://www.musicfanclubs.org/beastieboys/presspages/06001994.htm) got the artist's name wrong - it's gotta be Eddie Cano, not Canto (as someone in that 2005 thread already said). But of all the Eddie Cano album covers on Amazon, none of them have him wearing a tuxedo "and a lurid ruffled shirt" as the Select article states.
See his covers here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_1?rh=n%3A5174%2Ck%3AEddie+Cano
Only "Cole Porter Duke Ellington & Me" has him wearing a tuxedo, so that might be the one. But he's not necessarily behind a piano on that one.
God, I'd love to see that cover. I wonder if Ad Rock still has it.

the article encapsulated a feeling a have that might be the biggest thing i love about the band aside from the music: they made growing up is cool.

I really enjoyed what Glen wrote about Adam and his photo.

http://idealistpropaganda.blogspot.com/2013/01/adam-yauch-honored-tribute-i-am-honored.html

Also the magazine is on e-bay if you haven't found a copy yet.

that's really great. the feature, the cover photo, the follow-up about the photo, and now Glen's own words.

particularly in how Yauch was particular

Adam was always pretty particular about images of himself and the band over the years, and we had our disagreements at times, but in the end he always seemed to be able to get people to come around to his view, at the very least, appreciate it from his perspective.

so that leaves me to wonder if Mike and Adam had any say in the use of the image. Friedman didn't mention that on his blog but it was clear that they endorsed it after the times ran the feature, because they blogged it from their official page.

what an honor indeed for Friedman and the legacy of Yauch and the Beastie Boys in general to make the cover like that...

(I'm excited as my copy should arrive today via UPS from an NYC friend)
