Wow (http://www.thewrap.com/movies/article/jj-abrams-set-direct-next-star-wars-film-exclusive-74596)

Between him and Joss Whedon they hold almost all the keys to the nerd kingdom.

Right on. Now there is a strong link between Star Wars and Star Trek, aside from ILM of course.

I think this is a good choice and actually makes me more excited about the new movies than I was when I heard there were going to be new movies.

i think his adaptation of star trek did a better job of capturing the energy and fun spirit of the original star wars movies than the actual new star wars movies did, so i'm looking forward to it, he seems capable of the job.

frankly after the prequels, i've considered star wars to be more or less officially over in my eyes, so anything that happens to it now can't go too badly. if they're actually good, then that's awesome, it brings back a franchise that i liked. if they're terrible, then oh well, star wars was already dead to me so it doesn't matter (much like how the awfulness of the simpsons in the past 10 years or so hasn't affected my love of the good seasons, so no matter how terrible the new episodes are, it doesn't make a difference).

As a massive Star Wars fan as a kid and still a fan of the original trilogy I've realized that something like that was an isolated phenomenom and nothing will compare.

From the astonishing FX for it's time to the killer score, to the pretty impressive and fun chemistry between the leads to one of the most notorious bad guys to ever come to screen, it's just something that will never be carried on with the same level of awe.

Granted Abrams has skills - and yes he had some excellent characterizations in ST....and having the horrendous prequels (ok there were some decent parts) to improve upon - it is still a monumental task to keep the original trilogy mythos alive (unless they take this someplace else)

please no bringing back characters from the prequel - and no clones of vader/palpatine, even pushing the Fetts/Mandalorians on us might be a bit desperate.

I'm curious but not pumped - wish they never went further than the original 3

basically, yeah. the original trilogy did something magical that can never be repeated, namely, it invented star wars. i don't expect it to ever be repeated, but still, i wouldn't mind another cool space adventure movie

its never going to top 4,5+6 but as long i think they have a shot at being better than the 1-3 because a) they were shite and b) the 7-9 plot is unknown. I think that was half the problem with the first three.

yeah - but we can get cool space adventure without pounding the proverbial cash grabbing horse into the ground called Star Wars.

We haven't had a TON of top notch space stories in the past decade - the prequels are virtually forgotten, Prometheus was another big hopeful that fell short of expectations, Avatar...hmm, of course it was a hit, but if you peel away the dayglow colors it's just Pocahontas.

It would be great to see Luc Besson try another sci fi flick

I think one thing that makes sci fi hard to sell if the spectacle of the F/X. We are all used to cgi now and it seems practical effects may become the wow factor for furture ventures

The two generations of Star Wars fans are quite opposite.

Our generation loved IV & V. Liked VI. Hated I & II and some gave III a pass.

The generation of the prequels (mostly the kids of today) love the shit out I, II, III, and Clone Troopers & Clone Wars. Which is odd because when we were kids Stormtroopers were the bad guys.

Anyhoo, I'm hoping the writers and JJ brings it back to our generations likings. Or at least some type of middle ground.

I reckon Abrams has enough love for the franchise that there will be all kinds of references to other films. I hope.

I just hope Lucas stays well away, I cant see that happening. I understand why he did what he did with first three. I read Simon Peggs autobiography and he wasnt happy with first three but when he got a chance to meet him, he did challenge Lucas on it but when Lucas listened he gave him this piece of advice "Never make the same film twice". So fair do's

i'd like to see someone try and pull a 2001: a space odyssey and do it all without computers.

actually did 2001 use computers? i don't know but my point is that movie is old as hell but you'd never know by looking at it, it was quite a feat. trying that today and doing a good job of it would be more impressive than just about anything you could do with computers, i think

would probably sell like shit but maybe you could get a rich person to do it out of love or something
