Not talking about the King Adrock, but...

In the video for "Pass The Mic," does anyone know anything about the king billboard behind Mike D in the grainy 9MM footage? (I think it's when he shouts out Jimmie Walker.)

I always assumed it was a billboard for some medieval-themed restaurant/jousting thing. Google has no answers though, and I uploaded a screenshot of the video to image search with no luck.

Since it's the Check Your Head era I'm assuming the video was shot in LA so I would also assume it's for the midevil theamed resturant that's been around for days.

It's also in the Cabel Guy movie. Which Yauch references in Ch-Check It Out

I was trying to find this out a few weeks ago as well. it's very hard to find as it was 20 years ago when the video was shot.

you mean the chain franchise restaurant Medieval Times? the closest one to LA is in Orange County. and it's got a whole castle theme. unless it was a local ad, I think the king billboard was somewhere in LA proper near their old stomping grounds of Atwater, Glendale, Los Feliz, or Hollywood.

When I was in college someone told me it was for White Castle.

I bought it, but skeptically thought, "Wow, White Castles in LA must be totally upscale." I assumed it was a classic White Castle logo, since California still had some of those old-school McDonald's with the burger-guy-logo out front.

Years later, I concluded his hunch was total BS.

check it out around the :50 mark, it looks like the king is holding some sort of cell phone/radio/electronic device.

it was probably a beeper store or something.

He's holding a old device called a drinking chalice. It's just a straight up king being all kingly, no clues, no funny business. He does look a little like Richard Harris though.

that's the same one I'm talking about. who knows, it could have been a billboard for the place, but your guess is as good as mine.

I could have sworn they mentioned something about it in the video anthology commentary. I'm at work so I can't check right now.

It could be JJ the king of beepers. He had tons of TV ads and billboards in LA in that era.

Ding ding. That's gotta be it. Jimmy JJ Walker. JJ the beeper king. Makes perfect sense.

Yeah, in the directors commentary off the Anthology someone asks if that is J.J. king of the beepers. Yauch says he doesn't know. Probably is.

Thanks for the link but that just led me into a 3 hour tour (a 3 hour tour) of watching Beastie videos on YouTube.

Found a photo of the billboard for the LA JJ King of beepers. Not the same guy as in the video. We need to keep checking....
