sounds like a "live" album?
Micodin
03-05-2013, 10:37 AM
From what I understand it's their "funk" album.
They are using all vintage gear, vintage mics, soundboard, everything.
They've been working with disco fuck legends like Paul Williams, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Chilly Gonzales and there are rumors that Panda Bear from Animal Collective has contributed.
Looks to be HUGE!

I don't do Daft Punk. I did but now I don't.
The Tron soundtrack was original if nothing else, non?
Micodin

Personally I liked the soundtrack to Tron: Legacy because it was just that... A cinematic soundtrack to a computer themed sci-fi movie. I wasn't expecting them to score it with French Disco House. It would of seemed entirely out of place.
The new record sounds like it will be the opposite of that. Back to their musical roots in a sense. Even if the new album doesn't live up to the hype it shall get. I hope they tour again.
I saw them in Brooklyn in '07 and it was quite magical. It was loud, the pyramid and light show was amazing, and the Robots were fucking awesome. It was a good night.

I disagree about tron. First off, i think they were picked to do it because of their previous work and then pretty much ignored all that. There were definitely a couple of bits that were crying out out for big banging beats and all we got was moody strings. But i suppose they were slightly handcuffed by the film being a bit shit.
Anyhoo, the little snippet i have heard sounds ok, cant help feeling its a red herring of some kind

I know what ye mean about them basically picking up a cheque on name alone and then proceeding not to do what they're known for but that doesn't necessarily need to be a bad thing.
Have you heard the Max Payne 3 soundtrack? It's scored by HEALTH who are, in my eyes at least, a massive bag of wank but their score blew me away. It is utterly beautiful and completely unlike anything they've put out before (y)

No, no bad thing. particularly reading about how they went about making it and sought loads of advice and had some ideas. I wasnt expecting homework but i just think some energy was lacking in places. And also i think they kept to the classic idea of a soundtrack and used lots of strings where i may have been expecting the odd familiar gurgle or synth , a bit more like the Hanna OST by the chemicals. that was the best thing about that film. I think Tron soundtrack played a part in the overall disappointment.

Yeah I agree in that they didn't exactly stamp their mark on it; it could've been scored by anybody, although I thought it fit the mood well and was well crafted.
I wouldn't listen to it over and over again - which I do with the Hanna soundtrack, because (shifting the goalposts slightly as it's an OST) it's easily up there with the Chems' best work. I fully agree with you there - bought the DVD just for the music to be honest as it's an average film at best (it always annoys me when that old dear gets shot through the chest while looking at the photo on the wall because when Hanna breaks in to her flat and sees the picture on the wall - which was at eye height - it has a fucking bloody bullet hole in it. Major goof!)
In other soundtrack news, there's some new shitty Tom Cruise piece of shitty shit coming out soon but it's scored by M83, whose instrumental stuff has the same kind of vibe as most modern film scores anyway, so naturally I love this, even though it could be from any film from the last 10 years.

The film you speak of is directed by the same guy who directed Tron: Legacy.
Personally I enjoyed both soundtracks.
Tron: Legacy - Because it was a cinematic sci-fi flick that had another world type of looks and sounds.
Hanna - Because it was a fairytale/action flick that needed that fast pace energy the Chems excel at.
But, that's my own opinion and no one really gives a fuck.

I take the point about being other worldy but the bike race needed to be rollin and scratchinesque.
Hanna was alright for 2 thirds but they buggered up the end a bit. too much style over content at times
but the soundtrack ruled and they way they got atmosphere from just a couple of weird noises was impressive although i think they had a better shot having already known the director. think him and his brother did a lot of the chems visual live show. i could be wrong.

Joe Wright directed Hanna.
Adam Smith is known as the third Chem Brother. He's been doing their visuals since they started out as the Dust Brothers and has been touring with them ever since. Their live dvd Don't Think is quite good!

i would hope and think it is this. i hate when half an album is released before the album leaks (bc lets be serious there are no albums that make it to its release date these days without leaking). leaves something to the mind, a little anticipation and mystery can be a good thing..
either way daft punk is a cool as group. really on their own level with music and i appreciate what they do. looking forward to this.

sick of all the fake versions of get lucky, kinda taking the shine off the whole thing tbh.
after reading a bit of stuff, it turns out they are reacting to all the button pushing EDM by numbers of some other acts by getting quality musicians in and trying to keep it real as much as possible. Which is commendable but i wonder if they shouldnt have done what they are used to and showed these acts how to do it properly. but hopefully their influence and ideas will still shine through. it sounds like they have worked really hard on this and i just hope its as good as they think.
M|X|Y
04-17-2013, 08:46 PM
been listening to that teaser a whole bunch
it should be said though:
as someone said here... it's disco funk. does that take away at all from enjoying it? not at all.
i think the way younger kids are responding to it is kind of a result of the crappity shit they've been listening to these past few years. somehow, the appreciation for it does bode well for pop culture because i think it might get people looking back and then appreciating where disco and funk are derived from. appreciating musicianship and organic flow and stuff like that.
so yeah. i love it. the teaser video is fantastic. i love the whole idea of daft punk. i love that a guy older than my dad is rockin on it. cool shit (y)

well just finished listening to it.
If asked to describe it in one word then weak is the word i would use.
If I was asked to elaborate then i would say its self indulgent over produced easy listening disco wank.
Its like acid house never happened.
This was not the way to answer EDM, the way for them to do it was take influences like they have done but put daft punk twists on it and use all kinds of influences in there. Apart from the obvious voices, this is not a daft punk album.
I preferred Tron Legacy.
Am starting to think that two other buggers nicked the helmets and buried the real daft punk.
Piss.Poor.
Get Lucky is the only thing thats any good.
I see get lucky as a distant cousin of around the world or digital love, both great tracks but surrounded by other great tracks of differing styles. Get lucky is a rose among thorns.
That rant has made me feel a little better but not much

Thomas Bangalter one half of Daft Punk has said...
"The healthy thing is that people either loved it or hated it. At least people were not neutral. The worst thing when you make art is for people to not even be moved by it. Love and hate are interesting because it's deep and intense. It's one side of our music that people might be sensitive to and others might not."
From the first listen I fell in love with RAM. I really don't feel the need to defend why I feel about the record the way I do. I'm the one listening to it and that's all that matters to me. To me it's another classic record from Thomas and Guy-Man.
I guess it sucks that others don't get it, but I couldn't give two fucks.

the beauty of art is its all subjective. i dont think youll find a unanimous 100% "yes i like it this is good" no matter what the art is.
that being said i enjoy it. i do feel a couple songs drag, but there are some definite bangers and it has a nice flow. its a nice piece of work. they executed what they wanted, they set out with a goal and they did it. no one tells them how to make their music. i respect that.

I hated it because it didnt move me. There are at least 4 tracks of bugger all. Nothing happens
If you want to like it thats fine. I think that the marketing campaign and the fantastic get lucky gave me the wrong impression of what was coming.
I dont think its a case of getting it. From what i read , I was looking forward to what they were doing and understood why they were doing this but i didnt think there was enough variety, melody and interest. Just because somebody doesnt like something doesnt mean they dont understand it.
I still think they copped out. They wanted to react against other EDM acts but it just seemed like they ran away from that.
I really really really tried with this album and there are a couple more tracks that i think are ok but still they are disappointing ( i really like the idea of the moroder track but it still doesnt do enough for me) and i would still only put Get Lucky on a best of.

Get Lucky was my least favorite song on RAM.
I love both One More Time and Get Lucky but they were not the stand out songs for me personally on either albums. I won't skip them when they come on, but since they are on constant rotation everywhere, I appreciate the other songs more.
Make Some Noise is in the same boat from HSCP2.

I fucking hate how they've become 'hype' music. Just another group who have suddenly become trendy to like. I also don't think the album is that good. It gets slated, but I'd take Robot Rock over anything on it. Since when do Daft Punk need to work with hit-makers? Funny you say that because I bought Da Funk on a when it came out and then felt like after that they blew up and I started to cringe a little at playing it out.
