View Full Version : Slander?

So somebody told my boss I "seemed stoned" when I took her order. I wasn't, I was just getting over a bad cold and so a little sickly I guess. Probably very obviously, considering I had a cough.

So like what would you do? Confront? Leave it alone? Sue for defamation?

confront

was it a snooty bitch?

Using the word "seemed" makes it far from slander. Slander would be if said person told your boss that they knew and had factual proof that you were "stoned" or under the influence and you were not.

So like what would you do? - Shrug, roll my eyes.

Confront? - Why? What's the point if it's a baseless observation?

Leave it alone? - Yup.

Sue for defamation? - Good luck with all that.

She didn't seem snooty, just like the kind of lady who doesn't have to work and has to hide her purchases from her husband. Basically she missed my message two weeks ago and called the wrong location to check on it, which caused a big hassle because no one could find her order because it wasn't fucking there. In the meantime she was getting pissed that it couldn't be found and said like "well I wouldn't be surprised if something happened to it, the girl was really out of it", etc. I wasn't out of it, she's just a dumb ass.

I'm just kidding about the slander, asshole.

I figured. That's why I gave facetious answers.

I wasn't trying to be an asshole.

Ok sorry, it's been a bad day. Bad few days actually. This jerk woman plus some dickhead clapping in my face while I walked by him just to try to startle me, and some other dude who comes in just ask for prices so he can complain about how high they are. He's been coming in for years, and I just humor him. Except today, when he said "hmm, that's pretty expensive don't you think?", I narrowed my eyes and said "yeah, but you like to say that about everything in here. You walk in, ask the price and then complain about it every time". He just looked at me and walked out.

Anyway sorry.

if there's one thing i have learned about all my wrangles in work its pick your battles. i.e is it worth saying anything, what am i going to benefit by saying anything or is it going to be more hassle thats going to do my head in and ultimately improve the situation by fuck all percent.

I'd leave this one well alone

EDIT: oh balls this is like two weeks ago.

well, as far as I know, she hasn't come back into the shop to pick up her piece. My anger has dissipated. I figure she probably feels bad about it. I still consider saying something, just so she can understand that you can't just go around insinuating people are on drugs. If circumstances were different, I could've lost my job. And for her to make such a serious claim so flippantly, it just shows her arrogance. I think really I'm a victim of classism, and agism because people like to assume I'm fucking 19 all the time. (which appeals to my vanity, but I would like to be treated more like an adult).

Anyway, I think I'll just play it by ear. Maybe I'll find out who her mother is and call her up and say "your daughter was in my shop and she seemed really out of it and nervous, frankly it seemed like she was on valium".

I can't believe you're still employed there actually.
Retail and customer facing is clearly not for you.

You admit you're being intentionally sarcastic and insulting to the customer.
You've probably been there too long and a career change sounds like the best thing not only for your employer, but also for you.

Anyway, sorry. Just my 2 cents.
Good luck.

I've been in almost the same exact situation, except I was high.

people can get weird when they become a customer. I was in a bike shop once and this guy came back with his bike that he just bought fuming because it didn't have a kickstand. he was demanding that they either give him a kickstand or give him some money back. if you're buying a pro quality bike it's not gonna have a kickstand. there's not even a place to attach one on a pro quality bike so they don't even carry kickstands. if it was so fucking important to him why didn't he notice it when he first bought it. he was certain that he was being "ripped off" somehow because "how can a $600 bike not even have a kickstand????". the people running the floor were trying to reason with him and he would not take no for an answer. eventually the shop owner poked his head out from the office and just gave the guy 50 bucks and thus rewarding this dickhead's bad behavior. some people are just fucking stupid and use places of business to fuck with people so they can buff their ego because no one ever puts them in their place because of the power of the dollar.

bah, get off my back. You obviously haven't worked in an urban area for an extended period of time. I've had to call the cops on people who come in all the time just to harass me and my staff. I'm matter of fact, I'm not rude. If I were a man, you'd applaud me. I work hard and I do a lot for the business. I'm just blowing off steam here, I don't act like a bitch unless I'm fucking provoked. and on this board, provocation appears every time anyone says anything vaguely opinionated.

I'm sick of people getting away with being dicks for no reason.

This happens every day of my life, sometimes multiple times. I don't put up with it. And, actually, as a result I think we have a more steady client base and our customers are by and large very nice. But I encounter hundreds of people of different walks of life per week, so there are a lot opportunities for me to be exposed to someone who wants to treat me like shit.

I'm an educated person and I know a lot about what I do and I do it well. People need me to answer their questions all day, and I answer them all, the buck stops with me. So when I get treated like I'm some art school student with a part time job, I get a little testy.
