Beastie Boys Sign Memoir Deal

Well once again Hood had the info early on. It's now announced in New York Times.

The book, to be edited by the hip-hop journalist Sacha Jenkins, will be loosely structured as an oral history. It will also have contributions by other writers, as well as a strong visual component. Ms. Grau and Luke Janklow, the group’s agent, both compared it to Grand Royal, the Beastie Boys’ acclaimed but short-lived magazine (http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2012/05/remembering-grand-royal-beastie-boys-brief-brilliant-magazine/51944/) in the 1990s, which explored some of its wide-ranging pop-culture interests with curiosity and snark. “The first words out of Mike’s mouth were, ‘I don’t want to do a straight memoir,’ ” said Mr. Janklow, of the firm Janklow & Nesbit.


Mr. Janklow said he had been in discussions with the group several years ago about the possibility of a book, but they were set aside as the third Beastie Boy, Adam Yauch, known as MCA, began to suffer from cancer of the salivary gland; he died last year (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/05/arts/music/adam-yauch-a-founder-of-the-beastie-boys-dies-at-47.html) at 47.
“After Yauch died, I didn’t push them,” Mr. Janklow said, “but I think that

Edit: I has been years since I read this. Started reading it after I posted it. Most definitely a majority of this would have to be included in some aspect.

I hope its not too difficult to read... I'm looking for the info more than I am an artistic statement, personally. Like a magazine format or some kind of weird non-sequential thing would be a little disappointing. Multidimensional could mean alot of things though. My guess is that it will will involve text, photos, sounds, perhaps internet links. Or perhaps it will be kinda like the audio commentaries, with an accompanied program of photos(?)

whether there will be new music or not, this gives fans so much to look forward to.

and it looks like Mike and Adam will be keeping busy for the next couple of years.

Adam was over here the other day and really wanted copies of images from this day in 1993, no scanner, he just started snapping pictures (with his iPhone) of my slides on the light table, blurry no details... and i even made a few through my lupe for fun �� see Yauch is holding onto my flash in this photo as in the one you may have seen in my MY RULES book, but this day last week, Adam and i looked though everysingle Beastie Boys photo i have ever made! Mike and he are putting the finishing touches on their story book that will be released next fall. Promises to be pretty incredible.

I'm really excited. Tbh, although there was some talk about not doing the standard memoir / making it a little different, I wouldn't even mind if it was just straight recollections. I must've re-read the Anthology booklet a thousand times.

I agree. He definitely had major influence on so many projects. From videos, PB cover art, awesome i shot that video, Ill communication artwork, etc., etc.

Didn't they go back in to the studio not long before MCA's death per his request? Part of me hopes if they release "new" songs with the memoir that something comes from those sessions.

The other part of me knows that if they do release something like that it will probably depress the hell out of me for a while

On my audio wishlist are (a) Desperado (studio version); (b) the Jerry Lewis; and (c) Hot Sauce Part I. Supposedly, all of these exist although it wouldn't surprise me if they don't want to publish the older stuff due to lyrical content.

I also think the story, coming from Adam and Mike - with perhaps some additional insight from Yauch in a historical sense - is a strong enough selling point. They had an amazing career and journey.

That said, I wouldn't say no to some golden nuggets!
