View Full Version : Music you stick with to see what all the fuss is about.
I missed out on lots of stuff, not everything - but lots.
I never got the whole Snoop, Dre, G-Funk, Tupac, Biggie bit. I'm trying to catch up.
Honestly though - I'm slowly picking out a favorite here and there, but lots of it just isn't for me. I used to know a guy who insisted the 80s were great and made me slog through loads of shitty Smiths tracks, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure, etc. etc.
Have you ever just kept at trying to get into a band because consensus is that they're great? Did it work out and produce some enduring favorites?

i don't understand the appeal to typical 80's music. did it really accomplish anything? I just seems like they were trying to just sound different. using the synths and the over the top studio tricks and production just to create new sounds rather than create new music.
pink floyd I had to grow to love. you don't really notice the grand scale and the achievements of their best music right away. well at least I didn't. too slow and meandering for me at first.

Yeah. I remember my friend's dad playing Floyd in the van as a kid when he drove us on some long long journey. I didn't get it, and a couple tracks that ended up being some of my go-to Floyd songs as an adult felt like absolute torture back then. I just didn't get why it kept going - "where are the words? why is it so slow!?"

I've decided that a lot of 80's music really was just garbage. Especially after being subjected to it during the shifts of various day jobs in high school.
The only times I've managed to really "get" the aesthetic was playing GTA Vice City and being able to appreciate (some of) the new 80's retro music that passes itself off as French Touch or really really deliberately throwback synth stuff like Com Truise, Kavinsky, Knightlife etc.
