do you go to a barber or a salon?
basically im asking if a chick or dude cuts your hair. I've found that dudes are better with the clippers and chicks are better with the scissors. when I use to get fades i'd go to a Italian/Puerto rican/black barber. but I haven't gotten a fade in a while. when I do get a haircut(which is like every six months) I get it as short as it can be cut with scissors and leave some up top to mess with at some salon type place. you just gotta be careful when a chick cuts your hair. you gotta tell her exactly how you want it. if you don't they tend to give you cute little boy haircuts.
i get mine cut by a lady at a salon (a generally lady-oriented one i'll admit but male clients are regular too so it isn't gay IT ISN'T)
i have difficult hair that's super easy to fuck up when barbers (or stylists) don't know what they're doing. i've also never quite learned the nomenclature or how to describe the way to cut my hair without fucking it up, so for me the best solution is to pay a decent price to a professional stylist who will see me over and over and develop a relationship with my hair and just kind of figure it out on their own without me having to guide them too much

I go to the Italian barbers in Philly. I get everything done with clippers and they clean up the back with the hot lotion and straight razor.

when i had longer hair, i learned to prefer women (or gay men) to cut my hair. why? a straight man generally doesn't really know what looks attractive on another straight man. a woman, especially ones in the beauty industry, generally knows better what is attractive on a man.
i used to get my hair cut at a $15 barber and was almost always unhappy with the outcome. for YEARS. till about high school. i started going to a woman and it got better. for someone with straight chinese hair like me, it's a bit of a challenge to get a good haircut.
i worked for a rich gay guy who chided me for my haircuts. they weren't that bad but, again, he knew better. he told me to go to where he gets his hair cut - some fancy hot shit place downtown salon. it was a woman. that $80 hair cut was worth every penny, my dome never looked so good. EVERY PENNY. did that for a few months.
i couldn't really afford $80 every 3 weeks so i found a place that was almost as good for $50 and did that for a while. woman, salon, soho
i found out something else. if you have straight hair like a chinese person, try getting your hair cut in chinatown. $30 hair cuts by a six-foot tall gay chinese dude in a salon - just as good as the $50 cuts.
i buzz my own head now every 2 weeks and it looks good and it's free.

Barbers, clippers on the sides and a cut on top. Only a few places manage to mess it up, usually women.

barbers, but since i have started taking my lad (3 yrs old) i decided to get some clippers and the missus does it now. I cant do me own, i have the hand eye coordination of a garden shed.
Its loads cheaper, its about 12 quid for both of us which is too much for about 10 minutes work ( we both have a number 2 all over) and there isnt the messing about having to get all the toys they have the barbers out then sticking them all away again.
and there was the time i sat him in the barbers chair and he then chose that exact time to do a massive poo in his nappy and i didnt have any spare so all the way home and back again after a change.mission.
i do like going to barbers but could only really go on saturdays and it was always packed and its much easier at home now as it was always a bit boring for the boy, he just wanted a lollipop after we paid.

I have a serious phobia of hairdressers. Nothing to do with scissors or anything, just that I can't trust someone who's never met me to cut my hair in a way I'll be happy with.
I used to have a regular 'dresser til about the age of 18. I knew her from being a kid (she was my mate's elder sister) so it was less like having my hair cut professionally and more like having it done by a kindly relative. She knew what haircuts I liked and which ones suited and all that shit.
Then one day when I went to the salon I found out she'd moved away and I was lumbered with some new girl who thought she'd be quirky and tried to give me a mullet. I think I spent about 3 hours shivering and crying in the shower when I got home.
From that day forward I have always had my hair cut by the missus (who says she can't fucking stand it because all I do is complain, but she still cuts it bless her :o)
This all changed about two weeks ago when I had to get my hair done at short notice for an interview. I rang about 5 places and none of them answered the phone so I hesitantly tried the last (and therefore shittiest) one available. The girl had no idea what I meant when I was describing how to cut it and I ended up coming away with a right 'marecut complete with lopsided earlines and random long bits of hair.
I am actually slowly coming around to the idea of liking the day when my hair has receded enough for me to just keep it clipped (y)

I pay $14 for my haircut by a random worker at a place called "Haircuts." I might have to wait 10 minutes on a bad day. Never book an appointment. I cut my own hair a few times between visits to help maximize my $14 investment. $11 plus $3 tip. Shit that math adds up?
I did work at a salon once and sweep up hair. made alot of cash as tips for catering to the women. "Can I go get you a meal?" type of shit.
The owner of the spa died of AIDs back arournd 95, fucking Raul was crazy, but he paid me cash, I saw some dumb ass bitches pay a ton of money for shit and I took some of their money too. He treated me good and never made any advances on me, but I heard some shit. Raul got some photos of me that went international in some "Passion" magazines for spas. We always laughed about it.

yeah, i have straight, thick hair too. i'm not asian (as far as i know--my ancestors got around, but not that far i don't think), but i have noticed that asian guys seem to have similar-looking hair. it just foomps straight out, like a koosh ball, and it looks awful if it isn't cut the right way. most barbers aren't ready for it, i don't think.
i never thought about chinatown. maybe if my stylist ever leaves town i'll try that
also freebasser, are you married now, or is missus just a term of affection? it's been a while and everyone seems to be married now, i just don't know

I feel bad that men have to get their hair cut so often. I cut my man's hair, but only like twice a year now that he doesn't have an office job and can be a long haired hippie.
I cut a friend of mine's hair as well, about twice a year because he's got longish hair and hasn't ever been happy with a professional cut. I cut my own hair too, I've never gotten a good salon cut. The last time I tried was about 4 years ago I guess. It took an hour, cost $60, and really wasn't that great. The stylist seemed exhausted and said "you were my challenge for the day", which I thought was annoying. I haven't had the patience to find a hairdresser who can handle thick curly hair like mine, so I just do it myself.
Sorry oops I forgot this was about fellas.

i'm so glad bob said that
my mr. and i go to the same salon but see different ladies. barber shops aren't particularly common out here (and the ones that are here are douchey rockabilly types). i'm SUPER picky about who does my hair, and so is he about his and my guy actually found his lady first, and i followed him to her salon (and just made an appointment with someone about whom i read good reviews) and it was a perfect fit. it ain't cheap but mr. cosmo is very particular about the way it's cut because of the way it grows, and she takes the time to get it just right. it's all about experimenting until you find someone that gets it right. i went to the same lady for years until i decided to change my style and she just wasn't cutting it consistently well anymore. in fact, steger went to her for years too, even long after i stopped going to her, ha! i feel bad that she's still my facebook friend and i've stopped making appointments with her. she knows :o

I don't think this is a man or woman thing. I know mr.p has had both male and female hairdressers he's been partial to in the past. It's just a matter of skill and temperament I think: some hairdressers are better at different types of hair than others, some people like a chatty stylist whilst others want someone who will just shut up and get on with it, etc.

Nah, I think it just depends on the barber's or stylist's skill set. Some are better at technical cutting, others are better at finesse cutting. Great stylists can do both, regardless of gender.

Most of the barbers near to army bases are run by women, usually wives of soldiers. There is this one near to one of my bases that I especially like, there's this young, pretty lady who works there with big boobs you presses them against you and touches your head in a nice way. I enjoy that place.

Not married, just one of the many things I refer to Becks as when I'm being stoopid - most of the other ones aren't SFW (y)
I see marriage in a similar light to my struggle of trying to get a professional haircut - being held hostage by a woman with a sharp implement who eventually leaves you without your money and less hair than you had to begin with.

of course some people are good at one thing and some are bad at other things, etc etc. i didnt say that no man can cut a man's hair well.
i said imo generally women - or gay guys - know what looks good on a man better than generally men do. especially if they're in the beauty industry. because they like men, they look at them and spend more time discerning what they find attractive or don't. generally straight men don't spend a lot of time looking at other men discerning what looks good on them.
like someone who loves cars and spends time obsessing over them will know car design better than someone who doesn't care about car design
yes everyone has an opinion but not everyone's opinion is as informed as the next.

Hair cutting is mathematical, it involves geometry. My mom taught her husband how to cut her hair in a pinch by describing how to do it geometrically and he understood and completed an adequate hair cut. He's an engineer.
My ma could do any type of hairstyle, even gave me a fade in 6th grade.

what the fuck
the reason why I mentioned anything about getting your hair cut by a man or woman was because barbers tend to be dudes and they use the clippers much more so their better with the clippers. people working in salons tend to be chicks and they use the scissors more so they're better with the scissors. most of you ladies probably aren't aware of this but a decent barber will not even use scissors at all. he'll just use a comb and the clippers and give you a great haircut. he'll have like 5 different types of clippers.
Dorothy Wood
06-06-2013, 10:13 AM
That's true but it's also true that a trained professional should know how to use all that shit. There's no exact way to cut hair right, that's why there are so many tools and techniques.
I mentioned my mom giving me a fade to say she was capable. She also always had clippers with different attachments. Plus a straight razor which is old school. She could do a fancy old school cut and shave with just a blade.
My point is that gender doesn't determine hair cutting ability. A well-trained stylist or barber should be able to cut anyone's hair by applying the appropriate method. If you got hair that looks good with classic barber cut style, go to a barber. If you got hair that you wanna keep shaggy trendy or whatever, go to a stylist. But just because that's true doesn't mean a barber couldn't do a looser trendy look or a stylist couldn't do a high and tight.

surely there are barbers out there who can cut difficult to manage hair and make it look good, but generally they dole out "one-size-fits-all" cuts..
...and dudes with hair that isn't difficult to manage are happy with that because it doesn't take much to get god results or they don't really care too much how their hair looks or, yes, some barbers might be good at all kinds of cuts.
just because people are happy barber hair cuts doesn't mean they look good or bad. just because some chicks think they look good in uggs and sloppy buns doesn't mean they're stylish barbers couldn't stay in business if they weren't making lots of people happy.
do you think a barber could work in a salon next to a stylist with equal results?

Stylists in salons do traditional cuts on men all the time. Not sure about barbers doing trendy cuts, I ain't been to a barber in a long time. However, a barber shop is about tradition, a salon is about trends. It's like two different genres. It's like a classical guitarist can probably also shred, but tends not to.

Technically accurate traditional haircuts will look "good" on any head, that is to say the person will look groomed and not like a weirdo. There might be a more flattering haircut for a person than a traditional cut, but the traditional cut will never look amiss, that's why they've been around so long. There is history, there is a fundamental geometry to the design of the hairstyle.
Barbers focus on the traditional aspects of male grooming. They probably could work in a salon with practice. The only thing I think they'd have difficulty with is chemical work, like perms and straightening and hair dye. Because that's a whole other animal, and hard to get right because you don't just mix colors together, you mix chemicals together that don't look like anything but goop and you can't tell what it'll turn out to be unless you know what you're doing. So they'd have to train in that. But hair is hair, the dexterity you need to develop and the basic knowledge can be expanded upon with training.
