this is a really good interview.
one thing i thinking about was (BOARD MEMBERS DON'T KILL ME) is that Rick should have worked on TT5B.
now madlib would have been great for that record too.
there were some duds on that album. i felt like it needed a little extra.
my opinion though!

i always thought that too. rick would have been a great voice of reason were he involved with that record. and the whole format of the music was rooted in LTI's shadow.
i dont see how madlib fits into the conversation though. it would be dope to hear the beasties over his beats in general though.

I agree TT5B has some duds, even Adrock has gone on record with that.
But, I feel like that record was too personal and they wanted to do it all in house.
As much as peeps have clamored on about the B-Boys reuniting with Rick Rubin or the Dust Brothers, those moments already happened and the Beasties were never about making the same record twice (although there could be an argument for IC).

the only reason i said madlib was because at that time he was picking up instruments and sampling at the same time (ynq, sound directions, etc) so for me it would have been a great fit because i feel they have like minds as far as approaching hip hop.

I still think it's feasible for Rick to be a part of a future BBoys release (that contains MCA stuff, of course). Rick Rubin was essentially a member of the group as DJ Double R (and way more of an influential member than say Berry or Kate, IMO), so Rick's participation on a new release would make sense on a lot of levels. And no, I wouldn't be asking for, or expecting LTI Part 2.
If the BBoys decide to release another album with the last sessions with MCA as a foundation, there would of course be a void production-wise with MCA gone. If someone were to step in and provide some input in his place, there would be no one more qualified or appropriate than Rick. This is not to say I would not be fine with and infinitely grateful if HSCP2 was the last BBoys album. But IF they did pursue something new, including Rick on some level in something might be kinda cool.

while the jury is still out on the possibility of adam and mike continuing on under the beastie boys moniker (which i still think is more unlikely than so) it sure would be exciting to see how their sound would react.

great interview, loved seeing him talking about songs with lives of their own.
also, never really saw the Shout/Girls comparison. I guess this was common knowledge?
.02 i think i would rather see Mario C working with the group again on any hypothetical upcoming releases...
oh, hello there tt5brevisited- tell us about your project!

wow. this is really encouraging. that song was really solid, especially for mike. that's not taking a shot at mike either btw, but when it comes to solo endeavors I typically find his the least intriguing.
very cool. really captured the late 70s punk feel well, with a legit shot of early drum machine culture. way to go mike. i cant wait to hear whats next from him.
thanks for posting, Kid P, this made my day. (y)

Not killing anyone, but personally the idea of Rick Rubin as producer on TT5B is a shocking one.

"Often Adam and I would go out at night, to Danceteria, and just exchange ideas. I can remember we wrote the song “Girls” on the train to Washington, D.C. We started with the idea of what the song would be. It was rooted in the Isley Brothers’ “Shout.” What would a rap version of “Shout” sound like? And if you listen to it now, you’ll see it’s really similar."
Wow. I never realized that before

Yeah I never made that connection until RR said it in the interview, but hearing it is pretty "i'll be damned" inducing.

Yup. I've been listening to that record for 27 years and I've never made that connection.
But, now it's out there I can't deny the influence.

Sounds interesting can't wait to check it out. So basically would you describe it as a throwback remix, making TT5B sound like it was released in the 80's?
Also Kid Presentable, thanks for sharing that link. That was pretty nice! I'd like to see the Beastie Boys move forward in whatever incarnation that may be, it's always been their thing to innovate and do what's not expected. I'd hate to see them do something that made it look like they were trying to bring back the old magic, and in my opinion that's what teaming up with Rick Rubin would be like. I'm not ready to see them turn into a Vegas act quite yet..........good article though I enjoyed hearing Rick Rubin's side of things.

Just wanted to add, the new Mike D music has a sort of Techno/Punk vibe to it, I like it!

Ditto with everyone else.
"Shout" was still a mainstay at every fraternity party I attended (LTI was released when I was in college) but I never made the connection despite hearing both songs routinely during that era. Yet now that it has been pointed out, it's so obvious!:)

so almost 30 years later and we're still learning.....someone needs to do an exclusive with DJ RR on and only on the Beasties...
