View Full Version : I think I figured out why I've always been depressed

As in clinically. I think I'm a night person. I think I'm supposed to stay up til 4 or 5 a.m. and sleep til noon or 1 p.m. I would get a lot more done and probably be a lot happier.

Maybe I'll open a night club!

That's interesting.

That's where my sleep schedule tends to sort of bottom out whenever my wife's out of town. I don't know if I'd say it makes me happier, but it's just what sort of seems to naturally happen.

Every night job (that I had to clock into) I've ever tried has been life-draining though.

Yeah, a night job would suck. My boyfriend works til 10 pm pretty often and it kinda blows (although I get a lot of ME time) when I want a date or something.

I was just thinking about how I have zero motivation in the day time to do anything. But at night around midnight I'm like "I wanna redecorate the back porch and make it awesome!" And I totally have the energy to do it, but it's almost time to go to bed, so I go, "I'll do it on my day off", but then my day off comes and I'm like, "uhhhhh, let's just do some internet or go shopping", and I waste a bunch of time on the internet or riding my bike around looking at stores and then I feel bad.

Or when I was doing some theater stuff a few months ago, we had to set stuff up after midnight and everyone was all "it's so late, I'm tired", and I was not tired, I felt great!

Anyway, my grandma was always referred to as a "night owl", she lived in a basement apartment with me and my family for a few years when I was growing up and sometimes when I'd get up early and go downstairs to the laundry room before school for clothes (around 6 a.m.), she'd be passed out on her couch fully clothed in front of the t.v. on because she stayed up til like 4 a.m. doing a bunch of little projects like refurbishing furniture and shit.
RIP gramma, I think I'm just like you. *sniff*

Well, circadian rhythms and depression are interrelated

hope you're getting treatment, meds, or managing well

I'm the same, unless I sleep till like noon I feel so lethargic and unmotivated. This is regardless of what time I went to sleep the night before. I have tried for a long time to correct this, apparently melatonin helps, I took cicardin but I didn't see much improvement. Maybe I need a lightbox too.

I'm starting to think its a corporate conspiracy to keep people tired and uncomfortable! Just like public school was structured to create obedient lil factory workers.

Kaiser, I don't do therapy or meds, but I've been thinking about trying some meds because I'm pretty tired of feeling suicidal every few months my whole life. But at least I've trained myself to recognize that my brain is kind of a jerk and can adjust my thinking when I get too dark. I'm trying to make a happier life for myself long term, hence trying to figure out if my daily sleep/wake structure could be adjusted to eliminate the sad feels.

Yeah me too because that's how society wants you to feel, maaaan.

I'm joking but also maybe I'm not. Maybe some people can be more productive later at night? Or if they rest more often. That's my question. I'm sure their are books about it or something, I haven't reached that far yet.

I mean if you get your hours of sleep and can have a fulltime job within those hours and get all your shit done then thats cool.

in the end i dont really give a shit what someone else is doing. and you are right society teaches us waking up early is being productive and usually includes holding some sort of a 9-5 type of job.

just for me personally i find i am more productive and feel better about myself when I get up early and bang a lot of shit out early.
