View Full Version : where's the masculinity in music these days?

has popular music always been as neutered as it is now? seems like everything is catered towards young stupid females. lady gaga's whole shtick is probably the most masculine popular thing out there.... meaning she does whatever the fuck she wants and doesn't give a shit what people think about it. or just plays it off that way. and all those rappers are nothing but attention seeking prima donnas. they're essentially what would happen if you were to pump a young, emotional teenage girl full of testosterone and she didn't know how to deal with it.

It's because gangsta rap and heavy metal aren't mainstream anymore.

but those genres weren't always around and there was still plenty of masculine music around. I don't necessarily mean masculine as in the ways those two you mentioned are typically considered masculine. neil young and tom petty are perfect examples of that. that blurred lines guy is probably the closest thing to a man in popular music today and he's a fucking douche.

Everything comes and goes in cycles. It's not the end of 'manly men' yet.

I remember the good old days when Duran Duran, the Cure, Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys were kicking ass and being real men. It does seem were getting back to the gay is cool like when Judas Priest use to have those big gay concerts for all the gay people.

hahahahaha. actually lol'd(y)

i think simon cowell has a lot to answer for, in moulding these kids to all look the same etc.

And then when it comes to alternative stuff, everyone seems to have an attitude of not being bothered about having an in your face attitude or masculinity.

Turd, I think you just gotta look beyond the mainstream. Also people who like hard rock or whatever are still listening to music from the 90s.

I was just thinking about how I hate the music so called "badass" women made in the 90s and how much I genuinely despise that shit. Not because they're women, but because the music is just awful to my ears. Like Neko Case, Liz Phair, awful then awful now. Today there are ladies who aren't just hinting at their vaginas coyly, they're stopping just short of revealing them publicly. I just watched some videos by Brooke Candy and Die Antwoord. I feel like those are chicks who are bringing more masculinity to the table than most of the men in music these days.

If by masculinity, you mean that take charge fuck off attitude. Which doesn't really only have to come from men.

Also, this song, I love this stupid video: http://youtu.be/A2GCga7YLCU?t=26s

(skip to 26 seconds if that link doesn't, the beginning is annoying.)

Mainstream music is definitely marketed to young women because they have a lot of influence over how dollars are spent on mainstream entertainment.

also, this thread made me spontaneously get that "whoaaa oh" garbage by that Lumineers band stuck in my head. sux

oh I definitely look beyond the mainstream. pop culture is just a reflection of the times and it seems like masculinity seems so be something that's thought of as being something that's not quite a good thing today. you have all these pop artists crying over boyfriends with whole albums and even careers dedicated to that shit. it's really fucking pathetic and it can't be all that good for young females to be thinking that way.

I think masculinity in music got confused with juvenile nu metal fred durtst type bullshit and it soured a lot of things.

as for woman that kick ass, Allison Mosshart... I fucking love her

not really accomplishing anything. no edge. no pushing. happy bullshit tame music made for useless girls and pussies that reflect those same qualities. easy listening bullshit.

I agree with your point about Lady Gaga. I don't listen to her but her first song (Just Dance?) and the one that sounds like Abba/Madonna (Alejandro?) are alright. I like the way she walks around in a bra with a sea shell on her head and tells everyone her next album is going to be gamalan music made on mars or some shit like that.

I think what I look for in music now is some kind of... truth? It's difficult to define, but I suppose a certain honesty in its creation. This music is being made because this is the music the artist wants to make, and if it strikes a chord for the listener then that's a bonus. Example; Neil Young in that regard. Still making albums of stuff he wants to make, never been afraid to do something different (within the scope of what Neil Young does, obv.) Take for example his album from last year Le Noise, just him and his guitar and a wall of Daniel Lanois reverb, but it's striking in its absolute integrity. I think quite a lot of rap music has this honesty about it as well.

Looking at what is around popularly it just doesn't ring true for me. I mean, Mumford and Sons? I just can't get with that. I'm not sure I've fully managed to articulate the feeling of 'truth' that I want to. I guess I need to think about it a bit more.

there just arent enough acts who inspire people. Not enough proper pop stars who are unpredictable, say things that provoke, take risks, treat it as an art form, have some integrity, perform like they mean it.

There are too many who just churn it out, same the same things in interviews, have no personality, hide behind a press person or slick website, do lots of advertising.

Gaga means it. Definitely and she is just the right amount of bonkers.

Dorothy Wood
08-29-2013, 04:54 PM
Meh, gaga is just as dull as the rest.

And Alison Mosshart is kinda weak. Not that into her voice or the bands she plays with.

I'm real picky though. I go to shows in basements and warehouses where people are sweaty and gross and weird. And I get fucked up so that the music blasting in my face and the movement of the people makes it seem like we're all gonna die but it's okay. You can't get that feel anywhere else. I'm starting to be the oldest one in the room though :(

I have a low threshold for corniness in rock, I like it real dark and serious. Oddly enough it makes me feel extreme joy.

TurdBerglar

what are some of these real dark and serious bands?

Dorothy Wood

I feel like I already posted some in another of your threads.

I like Xasthur right this second because I just found out about him.

Otherwise ga'an, liturgy, mayor daley, magik markers

I don't mean to try to sound cool, I just like hard weird music

this is pretty neat. it has that dirty 70's prog synthy style to it. you can get lost in all that's going on in it.

I think you recommended Russian Circles to me and I liked them a lot.

but I mostly like music that grooves and swings.

the dissident and drone stuff doesn't really do much for me. unless it's the melvins or sleep and those types of bands.

Dorothy Wood
08-30-2013, 09:23 AM
Yeah I don't always go for the drone. Especially if it's super repetitive and has no singing. Although I enjoy a good experimental/noise show in person as long as they know what they're doing. If it gets too screechy ear busting, I have to leave because that's just annoying and I can tell they can't control their equipment and/or they have bad taste.

People here are dying to go to Beyoncé's concert and I couldn't give a rats ass about it (not to mention the ticket costs 200.00 dollars), but I would like to go to Justin Timberlake's concert. Hihi! Funny thing is that all those artists will be on Rock in Rio this year, which is totally inappropriate.:/

True, music is pretty girly at the moment which is strange because the 'in dudes' at the moment seem to be - beards and tattoos.

All the girls want a beard.
