Have a day in Dublin in early October...never been...any ideas on what to do/see with such a short bit of time besides Guiness and Jamesons?

Jameson distillery was pretty lame. We only had one day in Dublin so we went there too and the only good thing was the nice bar in the lobby and the free whiskey at the end. Hot toddies on a cool morning were super nice, but the tour itself was very Disneylandish since they don't actually distill anything there anymore. Everyone I talked to said Guinness was better but we didn't have time to go there after that :(

I actually wasn’t considering a distillery tour as much as referring to drinking beer and whiskey…which I’ll surely be doing at some point during the day and evening!...;)…A friend also said the Guinness tour was rather cool…she also suggested going to U2’s hotel “The Clarence” and checking out the “Octagon Bar”…but it doesn’t look particularly interesting or Irish to me…
There really isn't much to do in Dublin. You can visit Guinness or Jameson or whatever, if you want. It's quite an expensive city. What I have found good is the atmosphere is less touristy more travellery, if that makes sense. Because there's not loads of photo opportunity tourism a lot of people are there for the... (ahem, sorry Irish people) craic. It's a good night out, you'll meet people from all over and most people are there to have a few drinks and listen to some music and so on. That's my experience.
I was in a bar in Dublin and for some reason talked to a guy who was there for a ping pong tournament and I asked him where he was from, he replied:
"Austria."
So... I responded... "Austria! Well, g'day, mate! Let's throw another shrimp on the barbie!"
He didn't get it. I walked away very pleased with myself.

Check out if there's any gigs (http://planetgigguide.com/dublin-gigs/) especially in some small places. Check out Temple Bar, but avoid the pubs in the evenings, they're full of tourists (unless you want to meet those that is...). Then it's of course what you're interested in. I've made a map (https://www.google.se/maps/ms?msid=205405684232224697081.0004d4c3579fb90cece5 6&msa=0) of some my favourite places, or places I want to visit when I'm there again. This is a map I made for a friend for last February, so it covers mainly her interests, but some other places as well. Haven't updated the record shops as the last times I've been there haven't had time to check them out.
Grafton Street is the main shopping street, but pop into the side streets for some more interesting shops.
Stag's Head is, like, my "local", but there's loads of genuine pubs even close to the bus station/just aside of O'Connell St. (like Flowing Tide). Check out second hand stores and flea markets, loads of great stuff to be found! If you have time go to Blackrock. East Point Village could be something, but I haven't visited it yet so can't tell... I really liked Dublin Castle, but it was more than 20 years ago I was there...
And Irish Museum of Modern Art and the art galleries .. Totally awesome art just about every time I've been to any!

Well, what do you know! Gotta a mail from Irish Tourist board... There's loads of festivals (http://www.ireland.com/en-no/articles/events/festivals/dublin-festival-season?utm_source=aug_2013&utm_medium=ezine&utm_campaign=dublin_fest_season) going on then!

Nice...I think I'll go to the Jeanie Johnston replica and Famine Museum...as a fitting tribute as to how and why Irish immigration to Canada began...although my ancestors didn't flee till the Brits brought in partition after the War of Independence...

Ryanair sucks big time!!! As their ticket prices are so low they charge just about everything. And a lot! The service is non-existent, seats are horribly sticky plastic and there's no room for your legs (and I'm short!) Flight times are ridiculous and airports horrible. Remember to check in online in time, make sure you've printed your ticket and your luggage is the right size and weight. Even for return flight! Get yourself some snacks or sandwiches or wraps before going on the plane (and the wait at the airport might become longer than expected, Ryanair ain't the most punctual airline....), the stuff they sell abroad is unedible. Personally I don't think their cheap prices are worth what you miss when flying, like, Norwegian or SAS. Last time I flew with them was out of necessity, otherwise couldn't get from Glasgow to Belfast in time for a gig. The flight itself cost £1, but the lack of sleep was unpayable.
but after having said that.... I hope your flight and your experience with them will be most pleasant!

^agreed on Ryanair. I had a much better experience with Aer Lingus, and it was crazy cheap! And yeah, I agree with rirv that there wasn't a ton to do so we ended up finding a cool old pub right by our hotel that clearly had a lot of local color (pictures up on all the walls of the local bands that play there weekly) and just wiled away the evening laughing and throwing back pints.

See The Book of Kells at Trinity College, if you are remotely interested in history or art or any of that sort of thing. Quite a significant artifact in all kinds of ways.
