Remember back in the early and mid 2000's when every big time rapper had their own record label and/or clothing line? Well am I wrong... or was Mike D the first emcee to have both and start that trend way back in the late 90's???

Anyone able to think of a rapper that did it earlier??? I wasn't

I would say Jay-Z.
Looked up the dates and his record label states it began in '95, and his clothing line in '99.
However, I think he probably had a lot of help establishing everything, so this is definitely arguable.

Grand Royal started in '93/94 I believe and X-Large before that so I'd say the Beasties/Mike were ahead of the curve for sure.

X-Large was founded in 1991, and Grand Royal was set up in 1992.

(Off the top) Hammer & Too Short pressed their own records & tapes and sold them out of the trunks of their car. #ownlabel

Master P started No Limit Records in 1990. They had everything from multimillion dollar record sales, movies, clothing, sports management, wrestling and really ugly Pen & Pixel designed album covers. All of this was in-house and independent.

So what you want about Master P, but dude literally has a gold toilet in his mansion.

I'm talking record label and clothing line. Lots of rappers had their own lable before GR.

Ya, I forgot about P. P and D for the early 90's tie ;)
