Way ahead of his time.

I was eating lunch Al Fresco at a place in the village a few years ago and saw him walking down the street. Alone, not a soul bothering him or even recognizing who he was.

That shit was like seeing the Beach Boys surfing on a beach in california, or seeing Biggie battle rap on a corner in Bed-Stuy or something.
Just as perfect as you could get.

Anyway, that's my Lou Reed story. A brush with greatness.

Can I Kick It?

Maybe the best use of a Lou Reed sample ever?

one of the best samples ever. only thing that lets it down is that the track had to be credited as being written by Lou Reed only. I'd like to think that was the publishing company and not him, i would hope he would have been flattered by the sample and if up to him would have only taken a little bit of royalties.

Yeah, that's a bit of a mystery now.

In a 2011 interview with Hip Hop DX, A Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg explained that the group has never received royalties from this song because of the Lou Reed sample. Apparently Reed has earned money from the track and though Dawg is thankful he let his group use "Walk on the Wild Side," he's disappointed that Reed hasn't bothered to offer to spread the wealth.

And then there's this... (http://www.prefixmag.com/news/a-tribe-called-quest-never-got-paid-for-can-i-kick/58939/)

Either way, I'm not going to let that bullshit sully one of my favorite ATCQ songs. I'm going blame it on the lawyers.

oh wow this is just beautiful...

To our neighbors:
What a beautiful fall! Everything shimmering and golden and all that incredible soft light. Water surrounding us.

Lou and I have spent a lot of time here in the past few years, and even though we’re city people this is our spiritual home.

Last week I promised Lou to get him out of the hospital and come home to Springs. And we made it!

Lou was a tai chi master and spent his last days here being happy and dazzled by the beauty and power and softness of nature. He died on Sunday morning looking at the trees and doing the famous 21 form of tai chi with just his musician hands moving through the air.

Lou was a prince and a fighter and I know his songs of the pain and beauty in the world will fill many people with the incredible joy he felt for life. Long live the beauty that comes down and through and onto all of us.
