because he was walking around with a replica AK 47.

why does this replica AK 47 exist? is this replica legal?

look how real this thing looks:

it's pretty much the exact same fucking thing except the barrel has been shortened. it looks as if the what's remaining of the barrel has been painted. was it orange at one point? I remember all toy guns having an orange barrel/tip when I was a kid so you could tell it was a fake.

why was the kid allowed to walk around with a very realistic replica of a war machine?

I had a BB gun when I was a kid. it looked nothing like a real gun and I still wasn't allowed to bring it out of the backyard!

look how real this TOY looks! why does this exist?

what is a cop suppose to do when someone turns at him pointing this thing at him?

where's the common sense?

this is bad, I did not read the whole story. I think this situation sucks for all involved.

I had guns that looked real as shit. 1978-1985, somewhere the orange caps in and realness went away. I could have gotten myself shot a few times.

i dont know this story and i dont know the rules about cops and guns as we took the sensible option in the UK but arent coppers supposed to give a warning before shooting? didnt they have time to warn the lad then obviously at that point he would have said no, its a toy gun. I know he shouldnt have pointed at a policeman but i need more details please

it seems that they approached him from behind and ordered him to drop the gun. apparently he turned around(probably not realizing) and pointed the gun at the cops so they (understandably?) shot at him. he also had a toy gun in his waistband. how real did that other toy gun look? why was it in his waistband? was he pretending to be a gangbanger badass? why couldn't the guns have been in a backpack or something?

why was he allowed to have these guns? it just seems too irresponsible to let some kid walk around with a gun that looks 99% real if you're not right on top of it looking at it. why is this "toy" gun even allowed to be manufactured? was it tampered with to be made to look so real? if so, who tampered with it? it just seems really irresponsible to manufacture a TOY too look that real regardless if it has an orange tip or not.

it's probably an airsoft gun. I know some people that are into airsoft. it's like paintballing but with guns that shoot plastic pellets instead. some of these guns, if you're not closely inspecting them, look extremely realistic. you can just order them online or go to a sporting goods store and pick one up. that's crazy.

it's not like he was running around with a day glow yellow supersoaker and got shot...

I presume you posted a british newspaper link cos i gave it the big one about not having guns over here. touche.
Anyway Daily mail doesnt count:p

yeah so , why are you carrying a toy gun around. unless you are running around with other kids clearly playing some imaginary war type scenario making rubbish machine gun noises then fine. but if you are just walking round with a replica gun then you are clearly up to some mischief and slightly misguided. And if someone shouts put down your weapon before they shoot, i think its a bit daft that you wouldnt at least check it wasnt for real.

yeah they shouldnt really be available but i dont think they were designed for kids to walk round the street pretending they were real.

If I had to put money on it, I'd wager that because he was 13 he never gave a thought to the idea that he might be putting himself at risk. So he went strutting around with his fake gun, probably even priding himself a little bit on the idea that some people from afar might think he was carrying a real one, and it never once crossed his mind that this might get him shot, because he was just being a dopey kid with no sense of his own mortality.

I don't think that's a valid excuse.

so then where are his parents or his friends parents or any adult to set him straight?

he should not have had this "toy" gun. period. this toy isn't some silly piece of plastic junk that me and all my friends had as kids. well at least it doesn't look like it. how did he get a hold of it? did his parents or his friends parents know he was running around with this thing? this is not something a 13 year old boy should have without any supervision. honestly I see no reason for why something like that should even be allowed to be manufactured. there's no reason why something that's essentially a leisure toy used to have fun with to look like a full blown war machine.

i heard about that story but i didnt know this gun looked that realistic
im not a (american) cop lover at all but it makes sense why the cops acted this way

i think too that the manufactors and parents are the ones to blame here

for how he got ahold of this gun and felt it was totally alright to walk around town with it?

kids are capable of keeping a lot of stuff from their parents. I know this because i was one once and i have some now.

I don't understand why he was killed. A friend of mine got shot by cops (it's a long story) and they didn't shoot to kill. I'm guessing because either those cops had better aim...or because the cops in California thought the kid was just a hood rat and didn't care if they killed him. Senseless on all sides. Guns are stupid.

cops are shooting people and dogs for much less than that

Where did I say I was excusing it?
