3 years, 3 DJs and over 150 tracks in the making, ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ remixes, recreates and reimagines the Beastie Boys’ tour de force and genre-defining sophomore album, Paul’s Boutique – and now this reworking of what some call the Sgt. Peppers’ of hip-hip is taking the stage in Sydney and Melburne and Perth Festival. Helmed by 3 DJs – FOOD, CHEBA and MONEYSHOT – this has been a homework project of epic proportions – more than just a mixtape, it is ‘a deeply affectionate, highly articulate love letter to a classic album, from a classic time, composed by peerless artists.” (Buzzine)

Paul’s Boutique sustained strut but also developed a kind of shimmying soulful expression. Teeming with samples, it can respectfully be described as much-loved bastard child of a thousand fathers. A list of samples runs at five pages and includes a wide and vast array of genres and artists ranging from well known artists such as Kool and The Gang, Chic, Tower Of Power, The Beatles, The Eagles, The Commodores, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC that resulted in the creation of a musical amalgamation that was not geared towards satisfying the commercial masses. Paul’s Boutique is legend, iconic not just in the hip-hop sphere, but far beyond.

Embarking on the near impossible mission, DJs FOOD, CHEBA and MONEYSHOT sorted through the labyrinthian mess of samples used on Paul’s Boutique and the sourced all original vinyl samples of all the tracks that the hip-hop trio and production crew The Dust Brothers used to create it. ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ is the result, weaving together all the original samples plus a cappellas, period interviews and the Beasties’ own audio commentary from the reissued release into an electrifying audio-visual experience that is slick, fresh yet nostalgic, and completely unmissable.

DJ Food (aka Strictly Kev) is best described as Food for DJs, simple as that, just flip it around and it begins to mean something entirely different. He DJ’s out regularly, travelling all over the world and creating a stir wherever he plays! He is amazingly versatile, both in the variety of tunes and his skills on the decks, playing a mix of jazzy, funky breaks, bootlegs, hip hop and usually building the set to a drum & bass crescendo that has the crowd going nuts.

The ever-eclectic DJ Moneyshot has won a mad decent following for his killer mixtapes, bubbling live sets, and party-smacking tunes. His style is air tight, and best described as “dance floor beats with hip-hop skills,” if you’re asking.

DJ Cheeba is the sight and sound of Solid Steel’s new school. Hailed as one of the most progressive audio visual artists around today, Cheeba has found an audience world wide with his unique style of turntablism and video manipulation.

“While countless DJs and producers have tried to decode its cornucopia of samples, three British turntablists finally succeeded by re-coding one of rap’s greatest albums.” (Consequence of Sound)

‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ is more than just a tribute – it’s an extension, a reimagining of the Beastie Boys’ legacy!

Going on Tuesday. Looking to fill that Beastie sized void in my life, and just have a nice, mindful time on my own with sound that I love.

I know it's sore subject and opinions on it are super divided around here, but... Just think if they could get Mike D and/or The King Ad-Rock to do live vocals over their mix, at one/some of these shows... That is a good look for the future of Beastie Boys live show!

Sounds cool but...

this has been a homework project of epic proportions

I mean, I'm sure it was a lot of work....but it just sounds funny...I think it pales in comparison to the amount of work that the Dust Brothers, Matt Dike and the Beasties did on the album itself. Now that was epic proportions.

We'll see.

We'll never get another Beastie Boys show, but right now, prior to entry I'm already witnessing diversity unified at Perth's epic Festival Gardens. Never even checked this out on soundcloud so am interested as to what it will be like. It feels like a B Boys show, and that feels good.

Oh hey so this ruled. Definitely not what I expected, but mad fun once I took off my superfan pants and put on my good time trousers. Danced my ass off. A couple of minor misfires, but came from a good place. So let's acknowledge that while PB is a peerless work by peerless artists, this is indeed an epic homework project in much the same way as those related to many other great works in history which have been reinterpreted through careful analysis by dedicated students.

If I have a criticism it's a pretty esoteric one: this could really serve more as a tribute to the Dust Brothers, but whatever. The two creative halves of this whole caught lightning in a bottle and PB wouldn't be PB with even an ounce of its personnel missing.

Highlights were many - as I'm sure those who already heard the mix will attest (I hadn't) - but for me it was the rebuilding of Car Thief and the tribute (no spoilers). I got to stress, keep an open mind. It's not the album but it's fucking dope as a live piece.

I met two other super fans (what up?) and had the nicest time. Also was lucky enough to meet the three djs and was able to thank them for allowing people to share in some B Boys magic without a roof over our heads. Fuck you to the local media dickhead who was being a drunk smartarse, too.

9/10

Thanks for the recap KP!

If they were bringing this show to Philly I would be buying tickets now.

You'd dig the most. It's like the Criterion Collection did Paul's Boutique.

It's legit. Some serious time and craft went into this project. I dig it.
