Hey Fuck You
"You've been in the game, your career is long. But when you really break it down, you've only got 2 songs."

this has bugged me for nine years, who was MCA dissin?
My best guess is Coolio or Dr Dre.

Micodin

Dr. Dre?

The Dr. Dre that made classic albums like Straight Outta Compton, Efil4zaggin, The Chronic, & 2001?

Or the Dr. Dre from Yo! MTV Raps?

I don't think they are really going at anybody but jut wanted to make and old school braggadocios sounding record...

But if we want to throw around wild guesses, why couldn't it be The Prodigy. They only have two hit's (Firestarter and Smack You Bitch Up) and MCA didn't care for them.

Hell for all we know (and the record kinda sounds this way) they could be play 'dissing' on each other, trading off verses and all ------> just clowning on each other. Modern radio still only think the Beasties have two hits... FFYR and Sabotage

He wasn't dissing a rapper, he was dissing two hit wonders in general

Tone Loc - Wild Thing and Funky Cold Medina

Men Without Hats - Safety Dance and Pop Goes the World

Golden Earring - Radar Love and Twilight Zone

Spin Doctors - Little Miss Can't Be Wrong and Two Princes

I don't know, I think I'd rather be a one hit wonder than a two hit wonder. At least a one hit wonder gets to appear on the occassional VH1 countdown

I think it's a reference to an actual rapper. "The game" isn't used to refer to pop music in general. It means hip hop. It's probably some ass who disrespected the Beasties at same point, and didn't take it back later in old age like some of the others did. I'm sure there's some examples out there.

^I don't understand what your are trying to say...

Maybe The Prodigy has more hit's in Europe or wherever you reside, but those are the only two they had, that us here in Denver ever knew about during the TT5B era.

I don't think it's 50, why diss him and then sample his voice and pay him for the sample on the same LP? ----What part of the game is that?----

Brass Monk

The whole 50 angle is just perplexing. There's pretty much zero reason why they would bother to dis him, directly or indirectly. Seems like some here really don't like him and are projecting their dislike of him onto this topic (this seems to apply to a few other rappers as well).

2 songs: Breathe and Firestarter.
Prodigy thankfully really just came and went in the States.
Yet I don't think Yauch was dissin' them or anyone else specifically. But it makes as much sense as any other artist-being-dissed theory.

The Prodigy does has a nice catalog of songs and they continue to tour and sell out shows. Just because they are a UK based band doesn't mean their music is inferior. The Chemical Brothers are in the same boat. Just because you've only heard of Block Rockin' Beats in the US doesn't sully their talents and body of work.

some think it's 50, I gave an example why that doesn't fit

I guessed it might be the prodigy, some of you think they have mad 'hits'

but really it sounds like it wasn't about anybody but was just braggadocios (like I said up top)
...good diss records are sometimes open enough that anybody listening and starts catching feelings thinking it might be about them, just got pwned
---------> like flies to the web.

they include 'step your game up songs' like HFY on a lot of records by they aren't aimed at specific wack MC's, just wack music in general. i.e. PSIYG and TMR

For a group that has released five studio LP's and only one hasn't gone platinum, while the other four have gone 2 to 4 times platinum is pretty successful. Plus having 21 singles is pretty impressive.

I'm not a huge fan of The Prodigy, but I know they've been putting in work. It's pretty hard to deny the facts.

sorry i meant "I re-read your post..."

i thought you were maybe being ironic about yauch not liking the prodigy after he kinda put the story straight on here in that thread.

Maybe its different in the states but there are still bands that are big in the states that havent had loads of hits in UK, but i know that they are still popular in other countries. I dont know all bands chart history but i think if a band is still making albums after twenty years that usually means more than two hits.

I'm happy to see some appreciation for The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers. Liam had some quite a few kind words about Adam last year.

My point is their body of work is impressive. With 5 studio albums they have gone 9 times platinum with the BPI. I know thats a lot of numbers for a dumb fuck as yourself to grasp, but for a band that's been around for over 20 years and to sell that many records in the UK alone is quite a feat.

The Prodigy are cool, Music for the Jilted Gen is a borderline masterpiece! Despite the Reading '98 thing I really do not think Hey Fuck You has anything to do with Howlett et al. I always thought it was more of a general comment on shitty MC's dominating the scene with the odd potentially specific reference thrown in for good measure. I'm not sure why The Prodigy are even part of the discussion... and for the record they've long made their millions by now.

Whatever, I'll try again to explain why I made the hypothesis I did and then you can tell me again how awesome The Prodigy is in the UK, heck even call me some names like Micodin did, whatever helps you move on....

The year is 2004, MCA has a line about a group that's been around a while and only has two big songs. At time The Prodigy hasn't released a record since 97', yet Liam was still going around it interviews talking about how the B-Boys asked him not play Smack My Bitch Up over six years ago. If Yauch wanted to take a little shot, I think it fit's because I live in the USA (same as MCA) and unless you were following the band, we hadn't heard shit from The Prodigy since Smack My Bitch Up.
You don't think it fit's cause you love The Prodigy... so what.

i think there is a difference between two hits, and one hit plus a follow up that has some traction from the first hit.

I do actually think this is more of a universal diss vs. one person.

The Prodigy: a very reasonable target, since the feud they had in that live show where the beasties wanted to veto "smack my b up" for offensive lyrics.

50cent: I strongly doubt it since he's included as a sample voice in AOLTNYC. However the lines you said can be applied to him, and this one too: "Your rhymes are fake like a Canal Street watch". it's official that his major hits weren't written by himself. Why the Beasties would diss 50? the only reason i find could be that old story that was around this board in HN era, about how Dre stole Adrock's early music for "puttin shame in your game", converting it into the massive hit "in da club", that came out few years before TT5B

Eminem: it was also said back in the day, all that yellin and wildin, dermatologist, the sealing records lines... Reasons? I only can came in with that "incident" they had in an award ceremony, where Em was about salute them on dressing room and the boys kinda made jokes that he took as an offense. Anyway, I dont think it was a big deal cause eminem is always giving props to them, even today.

Lyrics for "The Dilemma"

I know he's racist but he's got good beats and
I know he's sexist but he's so funny and
He's homophobic but he's got great lyrics
What do I do pretend not to hear it
What do I do speak out shut up
It's disappointing, when you show no respect
I'll tell you that I'm so let down
And it doesn't have to be like this see
Let's just forget what we've been taught
What do I do speak out shut up
So much mucho macho interaction
You don't gotta play the role with me
Cause the beat turns sour every hour on the hour
Why you always feel you always got to have the power

Homophobic lyrics pretty much come standard in knucklehead hip hop (and Adrock knows that more so than most). I think you're reading too much into the timing of the record and the idea that Eminem being a knucklehead would somehow be more offensive than other rappers being knuckleheads.

No one used homophobia on a record like that before. Sure, someone like Sadat X may have said, "I ain't down with gays," but it was never used as a marketing gimmick like Eminem did to reach rebellious kids. That's one of the things that fed into his mainstream success and created buzz around it. The fact people on the news were angry about it moved copies of that CD. That lyric is about Eminem period. Fuck, it's the same defense everyone has used for Eminem, that he has good lyrics.

I'm sorry but how the Eminem and 3rd Bass fans here try to deflect stuff is fucking ridiculous. You can like different artists that don't necessarily kiss the others asses.

Clearly your mind is made up on this one, but I just don't see the homophobia that Em did as being any different than what you can find on about 50 other albums, complete with super-lyrical emcees. And I don't see how he did it as some kind of a pre-conceived marketing gimmick either. What he did in regards to this particular phobia is far from unprecedented in Hip Hop. That's not to defend him, just to provide some context.

IMO, Adrock really doesn't care or think about Eminem the way some of his fans do. I think over the years Adrock has heard a lot of ill stuff with nice beats with some cringe-worthy lyrics thrown in and he finds that irritating and disappointing. I think that's what the BS 2000 lyric is talking about.

Agree to disagree.

I'll chime in, although this has become pretty stupid. Those BS lyrics were referencing eminem in my eyes, but obviously could be applied to others. I just can't jive with people calling it a "shot" or "diss." To me, a lyrical diss is intended to spark reaction and retort from the target. No way that was the intention.

That Eminem story gets more and more distorted. It wasn't a awards show. It was on MTV and the Beasties were premiering a video clip and Eminem and D12 were performing at the end of the show. Em wanted to meet them so he stuck his head in their dressing room to say hello and he before he left he said, "you're still doing it" and apparently that line was something a lot of people and press was saying to the B-Boys during that time so they laughed. Em didn't get the inside joke and walked out confused. End of story, no big deal.

Yes, the BS song is probably about Em. I doubt he heard it or cared. Em came up as a battle rapper and has heard far worse.

Who knows who MCA was aiming at. TT5B had a lot of random shots. Rappers moving to the Hamptons, Rush (Russell Simmons) , Dr. Jeckle (Andre Harrell), and "backstabbers and bitin' MC's"

It's vague and funny. But, I doubt MCA was aiming towards anyone on Hey Fuck You like when he eithered Serch on Professor Booty. The Prodigy just doesn't fit as targets. People are fishing.

FYI: I like both BS 2000 records. The first was Adrock in his prime on the SP and the second was some Casio keys with breakbeats. I fuck with it.

I don't think they are really going at anybody but jut wanted to make and old school braggadocios sounding record...

...Hell for all we know (and the record kinda sounds this way) they could be play 'dissing' on each other, trading off verses and all ------> just clowning on each other. Modern radio still only think the Beasties have two hits... FFYR and Sabotage

this, also.
