Oh man, I know some of you guys must have experienced this.
Why do people do this to each other?
Making it so its compulsory to go (even though you're not getting paid) by assigning you with a task or item you have to supply.
Uncomfortable small talk with people you essentially have nothing in common with. There's only so much uncomfortable chip and dip eating I can handle.
Coworkers bragging about how much they drink and smoke weed occasionally like you're 16 years old and it makes them a cool badass.
Having photos taken so they're uploaded to the business' facebook/instagram to show "how much fun we have" and "how we kick back" #partayyy #woohoo #holidaybash #suchfun.
Making work related jokes, like I even want to talk or think about work when Im not doing it.

All the people at my work are fun to party with, but sometimes we go to the party thrown by the chamber of commerce and it's pretty brutal. Too much forced networking goes on and then people get wasted and weird. Last year I had some nice gin for free though :)
My wife's company (which she is leaving this week) has a brunch. That brunch is dope food and drinks and awkward conversation, so naturally I want to go and be anti-social.

I don't think I've ever been to a good work Christmas party, but I do find myself missing them this year because I'm not working at the moment. I do get to go to my fiance's one though, which should fill my awkward dip small talk quota for a while.
i work for a company of about 300 people, 290 or so of whom i hate
i've worked there 3 years and this was the first time i've been to the company xmas party. it will be the last
food was good and drinks were free but i'd rather pay for bud light and eat ramen noodles than go to one of those again

I love my company's Christmas party :o they always go all out with food and drinks and dancing and games and gifts. I do work for a pretty small, tightly-knit company that's practically a family, though, so it's always a huge fun bash.

You're a borderline misanthrope. That's not intended as an insult, just an observation.
I went to my first ever work christmas party a few weeks ago. It was much fun. We went bowling, then out to eat, drink and dance.

I had to listen to this foodie woman talk about how she "massages kale" before making salads with it and whatnot. "Massaging my kale" sounds like a disgusting euphemism for female masturbation.

I suddenly find myself fancying a bit of kale.

I had my first ever official company Christmas party last week.
I must say I generally agree with the sentiment of the original post, but somehow I managed to find a job where I literally like everyone else who works there, so it wasn't so bad.
Now, when I am forcibly dragged along to my fiance's company party, that is another story entirely.
Having to go to your own Christmas party is bad enough, but having to go to someone else's party? Forget about it.

I like the formal party but not the smaller pot lucks and treats gatherings. I'm happy to do that at other times of year but people pile too many events into December.
My wife works for Capitol One. They had a big party with casino games. There was a Texas Hold-Em table in the back hallway in the corner. I went down the hallway and played poker all night long and drank bourbon on the rocks. It was my version of a derelict Christmas party.

I'm bringing a dish made with dill on Friday. That will show them for inviting me.
