I think most of us here grew up with those twisty spooky tripped out dark kids movies from the 80's. Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, The Never Ending Story and so on. even the animated "happy" movies were darker and grittier. All Dogs go to Heaven and The Land Before Time are all centered around death. These movies were incredible as a kid and still hold up 20 years later. has there been any current equivalents that I somehow missed?

it seemed most of the stuff catered towards kids then was really trippy and thought provoking and creative. where has that gone to? I remember feeling waves of anxiety watching brave little toaster. those guys had a hard menacing time getting back home! that junk yard scene was scary! is everything sugar coated now?

Coraline, for one. Any of the Studio Ghibli films, for sure. Bridge to Terabithia (although to be fair, the book is much older; I remember it from when I was a kid.) Up has some fairly dark moments throughout, underneath the humor.

Oh and Fantastic Mr. Fox, that's a good one. And James and the Giant Peach; all those Roald Dahl stories have a nice edge to them.

but you're right... disney is not even 1% of what it used to be.. sad really. they used to play the classics and feature presentations etc.. now it's just digital crap with stupid plots that bore me to hell.

i didn't know steve jobs owned pixar and dreamworks. what's up with that?

I've seen a lot of these movies suggested and they're all pretty much fine even great. they don't seem to have the same amount of doom and gloom and overall acidtripness. besides 9 they all have this glossy sheen presentation and overall lighthearted feel to them comparatively speaking.

I think what gave these older movies their gritty charming appeal was the lack of cgi and low budget feel. they had this 70's/80's trashiness to them not really meant for kids. david bowie's cock bulge was completely on display throughout all of labyrinth...

It’s not on the same level as most of the 80s classics listed but I recently realized that the moral of The Santa Clause is that if you kill Santa you get to steal his life and powers and your life becomes awesome. It’s subtle but creepy

hunger games?

not entirely sure thats for kids of all ages really. Dark Crystal was a U but nobody has to die in grim battles. we saw it and discussed whether my 8 yr old could be watching it and our decision was not yet. And she has seen Dark Crystal a lot.
