Don't really have much interest in it. the bass and amp are both Silvertones. I would like to give it a shot but I have no idea where to start. a simple dvd lesson came with it. it appears my hands aren't quite big enough to even spread out against four frets as one of the instructions on the dvd stated. the guy on the dvd did it with no problem at all. so I don't know if I can even do this properly.

yeah get a tuner or a tuner app and just try and play along to music.
beatles or stones are good
I had a bass when I was younger.
I think the reaching the frets things comes with practice unless you have like, carnie hands. Just a matter of stretching a bit and muscle memory for where they are.
I gave it up eventually because all the people I wanted to play in a band with were more interested in noodling ad infinitum or being the John Mayer solo type douche.

Indeed. I played bass for awhile and it took some time to get my neck hand to get use to spreading out, pressing down hard enough, etc.

how did you guys begin? I don't even know where to start. drums were so much easier because I knew beforehand what it took to play them. it was just a matter of getting the coordination and muscle memory down. I have no idea what it takes to play a string instrument.

These days, Youtube videos galore to help you out.
When I learned an instrument, I always combined the learning of the boring scales and reading music with learning a song or two I liked.
Practice learning Janes Addictions Ritual de lo habitual. Easy to hear basslines that are repetitious. That will help get your hands trained. Picks are for guitar playing sissies. Use your fingers because thats what bass gods do.

Without a doubt. When I wanted to root four different Android phones or jailbreak my iPod and iPhone, there was always some 12 year old kid on YouTube showing me exactly how to do it. Everything is on YouTube.
