I'm 43 but you have to figure, the Boys are older than that, so.... For example Miles Davis was in his mid-60s when he was into Paul's Boutique. I bet there are people way older than that, that are just cool, open-minded, music-minded people.

The Beasties came out of the 80s New York art scene in a sense, and a true art crowd never really gets old-minded (narrow minded), they are always open to new and different things. Open-minded people can be of any age. You might not see a mob of senior citizens moshing at a Beastie show, but I guarantee you there are some listening.

Miles Davis' music and taste is awesome, nonetheless it is too bad he was such an abusive motherfucker. It sometimes ruins the music for me when I think about it. This piece (http://blackheadband.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/miles-davis-flashback.html) on the subject helps me appreciate his genius and beautiful work though.

There are tons of great artists who are fucked up people. I never had a problem appreciating great work regardless of the life and lifestyle of the artist. I am appreciating them as an artist, not as humanitarian.

The thing that's interesting to me is we don't seem to have a problem as much with those who abuse themselves. Such as with drugs, and killing themselves in one way or another. We don't demonize these people like we do with people who abuse other people. I kind of see it as the same thing. I mean, if I hurt someone else, yes, that's bad, but why is not as bad when I hurt myself? I am a person too. Plus as they say when you hurt yourself you are also hurting others at the same time. They are both destructive (self and otherwise) behaviors. I kind of see them as the same thing.

The other thing is an abused person, who has the ability to leave the situation but continues to go back to it....they are just as sick as the one giving the abuse. Aren't they responsible for "enabling" the abuser in this way?

(sorry if I'm going on a tangent just my thoughts)

Interesting thoughts. I think the distinction could be the self-other cost dichotomy. If we harm ourselves the costs on others are less than if we harm another person. Perhaps this can be debated. Another possibility is that self-inflicted harm is not forced upon someone to the degree that other-inflicted harm is. I should have added that self-inflicters are less of a societal danger compared to those that inflict harm on others. Specifically if someone robs grocery stores at gunpoint more people are at risk than if someone points the gun at their own head in their own home.

I'm 29 and originally joined this board in 2000 when I was in tenth grade (before they switched over and made Apr 2003 the earliest registration date.) You guys are a bunch of old ass motherfuckers.

Just kidding. I love you all. I'd say Bill Adler's probably the oldest Beastie Boys fan I can think of. He's got to be in his sixties by now.
