This is a must watch for me. Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of my all time favorite people. I remember watching the original with Carl Sagan as a kid and being completely amazed about all that's out there and what we don't and now know.

I just hope it isn't watered down and hokey and made to appeal to fucking idiots.

I have the OG Cosmos DVD collection and I saw Gravity in 3D on Tuesday and all I can say is fuck space, I'm staying on earth, and that's coming from someone who had a space shuttle model as a child.:cool::confused:

I was thoroughly impressed. It's the only film I've ever watched where I thought the 3D enhanced the film. It's a good length (90 minutes) and Sandra Bullock holds the film very well, considering she is on screen pretty much the entire time. The level of continuous peril is ridiculous and the special effects - all the floating in space and so on - are fantastic.

It's out on blu ray over here so I have no interest in the 3d aspect. I've been to a few movies in 3d and I find it very distracting. im always trying to focus on things in the background that are out of focus and you can never focus on it because well... it's not real. so you have all this blurry shit you want to instinctively look at and you can't get it in focus! drives me crazy.

but I think im gonna pick this up on normal 2d bluray

Here's one man's (interesting) interpretation of Gravity.

Ugh, I try not to give traffic to those clickbait trolls. That site is just not even worth discussing.

I've been against 3D since it's new rebirth. That said... I thought Gravity has used the medium appropriately and it's a true cinematic experience.

I know there are possible plot holes and scientific stuff that the writer/director had to bend with his artistic license but it's a "Science Fantasy" movie and a great one at that.

Back on topic. Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey is a must see from the reviews I've read. I'll be watching.

Im not familiar with that site. I came across that review and was like "THAT'S what you got out of that movie?!"

I honestly can't tell if they're trolls, or legit MRA douchebags. it's very, very, very hard to tell with those people sometimes

anyway cosmos--even if it is watered down and hokey and full of dubstep supernovas or whatever, if it secretly gets people interested in science who otherwise wouldn't have been, it can't be all bad!

I didn't really like the little animated anti religion propaganda bit. although I believe in what they were trying to convey I thought it spoiled the innocence of the type of show I it's suppose to be.

Starts in New Zealand on Sunday. Pretty amped. Just watched the Sagan one last year and loved it, but will be interesting to see a similiar show with updated facts.

ok so the second episode is still veiled atheist propaganda. well maybe propaganda is the wrong word. but they definitely put effort into debunking the popular cliched beliefs that that creationist supporters and evolution deniers and their ilk use to try to prove their side. which I didn't like at first because I felt the original cosmos was above stooping to that level of shit stirring. but im beginning to like it. if this shows mission is trying to falsify religious beliefs then they're doing a good job I guess no matter how fruitless it is.

I feel like on some level, if a thoughtful analysis of the scientific theories of the origin of the universe comes across as atheist propaganda, then it's just kind of like "score one for atheism"

but i haven't seen the show so this is just me running my mouth

well maybe propaganda is the wrong word. the show is definitely trying to sneakily troll the religious, though. which I don't have a problem with but this show isn't the place for that.

seth macfarlanes influence is evident(he's one of the producers or something). he's quite the shithead and all his shows are rather fucking obnoxious along with himself.

in the second show they were talking about breads of dogs then at the end they that particular segment quickly slipped in that the creation of breeds of dogs is sort of how evolution works. all like blah blah blah, dogs came about because of this because of that. blah blah blah we ALL agree to that. we ALL believe that. oh by the way that's kinda how evolution works you fucking dumbfuck shitheads. SO WHY DON'T YOU BELIEVE IN EVOLUTION IF YOU DO BELIEVE IN BREEDS OF DOGS! you see if given extraordinary amounts of time, nature can make the same drastic changes that man can artificially do to any animal!

it's just kinda like... whoa this is suppose to be educational and inspirational. not a show about shit stirring and controversial attention seeking like everything else is nowadays.

TurdBerglar

then eyes were mentioned. fucking eyes of all things and how they came into existence. this was purposely done because people who deny evolution and science claim that how the fuck can eyes NOT be created by god since they are so complex. it's one of their go to gimmicks. he went into great detail of how eyes evolved into existence from something very simple. all like... nana a booboo you dumb fucks. they're purposely picking clichéd things that these people use for an argument and focusing on these idiotic beliefs to debunk as to make them look like retards or to drum up controversy and publicity rather than focusing on just teaching the theories and facts. it's just obvious and weird and distracting that they're stooping to that level. but that it's being done on such a large stage and the manner that they are doing it is pretty commendable. I just wish it wasn't so distracting from the learning experience.

seth macfarlane is a rabid trolling atheist like bill maher. he's just a real shithead about it from what I've seen about this whole debate(I think I've seen quite a bit over the years. these guys that debate the religious are kinda my heroes). seth always seems to make his way into these discussions. why! he's just a trolling obnoxious shithead! who gives a shit what he thinks!

Well that is kinda what Neil Degrasse Tyson's fanbase is, I don't know why anyone's surprised. I don't understand why Religious people are upset, it's not like the contents of this show are a huge shock.

TurdBerglar
03-20-2014, 09:33 AM
that's exactly my point. there's no need for the shit stirring social-political slant they're putting on everything. it kinda spoils the show.

You're the one perceiving a political slant where there is none. It's just plain fucking science.

nope

they're picking very obvious things and use cartoons just how you see those weird psycho-manipulative Christian cartoons that are directed towards kids around easter time about how great jesus is and how evil everyone else is that doesn't believe in him. Cosmos is doing exactly the same thing against commonly held beliefs that they use to conflict scientific findings and theories. they're stooping to the same level.

That's pretty extreme. The dog thing was just an update of the outdated pigeon analogy Darwin wrote about in On the Origin of Species. It's a pretty common sense way to explain the idea.

As far as the ol' eye argument sure, that is the go-to example creationists go to for trying to explain intelligent design but why wouldn't you take that argument as a starting point and use it to teach? I don't see it has "targeting" any one group, that's just how you have a discussion. They never talk down to creationists, and even with the stuff in the first episode about Giordano Bruno showed that you can have your cake and eat it too; you can believe in a creator and still believe in and find your faith in cosmic truth. (Though I guess some the things said in that segment were not completely accurate in terms of explaining every detail of what and who believed what, probably more for time)

Neil deGrasse Tyson doesn't have an atheist agenda. In fact he identifies himself, when asked, first as a scientist and then when pressed for an answer settles on agnostic because being a scientist means he is open to new information. He would love to be proved wrong!

TurdBerglar
03-21-2014, 08:09 AM
I know neil doesn't have an atheist agenda. he always seems to avoid those things. he seems to want to want to include as many people as possible. but there's definitely a shit stirring approach to the show that I can't recall from the original(I haven't seen those in such a long time, though). there's just this weird vibe especially with those animated segments. these types of science shows and documentaries are pretty much all I use tv for. no other science show has these weird segments directed at people and ideas to make them look foolish or backwards or to purposely stir shit up.

Seth Macfarlane is t he executive producer and it's broadcast on Fox...

that's like a shithead storm waiting to happen right there
