Years ago - I guess it was ’97 or ’98 - I was recording with Biz Markie. We recorded a couple of songs together. Biz told ‘mother jokes’ almost non-stop and I laughed until I cried. God, he had a million of them. Some of them were downright surreal. One that stands out in my memory went something like this:
‘Your mother has an eyeball on her butt and still can’t see s***.’
Anyway, halfway through our second day of recording, Biz’s phone rang. His faced turned very serious.
“Whoa, really? Really? Really? Okay. I’ll do it…”
He hung up the phone and explained that it was one of the guys from the Beastie Boys on the phone. They were on tour with A Tribe Called Quest but the night before (I think they were in Seattle), they got into a fight on stage, broke up and dropped out of the tour. So they asked Biz if he could fill in for the show in Toronto, which is where we were recording. After explaining the situation, Biz asked:
“Will you DJ for me?”
The next day we were hanging out with the Beastie Boys, playing basketball and goofing off. It was a big outdoor show and 45,000 people were there. It was one of the funnest days of my life.
I miss MCA.
