TOP 7 HIGHLIGHTS OF WORKING WITH MIKE D

When HQ called to say Mike D was guest editing issue #43, I thought, This is it, it’s finally happened: one of the Beastie Boys has come for my job. You hear about white rappers overthrowing magazine editors all the time, but you never think it’ll happen to you. Lucky for me Mike didn’t want my job; turns out he doesn’t really need to work ever again. Also lucky for me–I spent the last three months chilling with Mike D! Here are 7 personal highlights from working along side Mike on Monster Children #43.

Visiting Mike’s House And Watching Basketball On The Biggest TV I Have Ever Seen.

We went to Mike’s house and he took us on the tour, which included watching basketball on a television the size of a basketball court. The Knicks looked like giants. I’ve offered to housesit like twelve times since then.

Knicks Socks

For the magazine department ‘Packed’ we went out to the Knicks training facility and had the Team’s Baggage Manager rate some luggage for us. It was a long drive to the TF, so Mike skipped out on the trip. But when we all got given authentic–and much coveted–Knicks socks, he was super bummed he missed out. He pretended he didn’t care, but you could totally tell he was kicking himself.

I Now Have a Nom De Hip Hop.

After a month of working with Mike, he decided to start calling me ‘Big Crom’. Initially I felt a bit weird about it because my dad is the real Big Crom, and traditionally I’ve always been ‘Little Crom,’ as in ‘G’day, Little Crom. Where’s Big Crom, out in the shed?’ Anyway, I’m Big Crom. How you like me now?

I Met Method Man

I met Method Man! I couldn’t believe it. And he was the nicest, funniest dude ever. I wish we were roommates. I rarely fan-out on anyone (I’m old and jaded), but coming face to face with Meth made me giddy as a schoolgirl. You should’ve heard me laughing too loud at all his jokes. Such a dork. Me, not Meth.

I’ve Had A Fight With A Beastie Boy.

Mike and I had a blow up at a restaurant because he said my editor’s letter wasn’t funny enough. I’m sorry, Jerry Lewis, let me try again. You can read all about our falling out in the editor’s letter I wrote, which is all about Mike saying my editor’s letter wasn’t funny enough.

I Have An Angry Voice Message To Sell To TMZ

One day I missed a bunch of Mike’s calls. On the last one he left a message about me never picking up my ‘motherfucking phone.’ It’s nowhere near as good as the Alex Baldwin thing, but he sounds pretty mad. Hit me up, TMZ.

I Got To Hang Out With Mike D.

Mike D and me were buddies for three months! I don’t expect him to recognize me in the street now the mags all done. In fact, as a precaution, I intend to snub him first in the event that we do see each other. Still, it was a fun ride, and the magazine looks dope.

it takes me straight to paypal for the $45 fee with no shipping costs,
which is not right and I selected international shipping?
so how did they make you pay for your shipping fees?
they send you an email? or was it combined on your paypal invoice?

I selected international shipping, and after fill the form (with address, country, telephone and all that), just before the check out, they added 30$ in concept of "Shipping & Handling". I paid with visa but via paypal... but it was all together, in the same step.
So if they didn't ask you already for the shipping money I don't think they will. lucky you :)

Issue #43 of Monster Children is bigger than that 1959 cinematic epic starring Charlton Heston, Tootsie. Not only does MC #43 boast an extra 56 pages of mind-bendingly incredible content for the same price tag, it’s also guest edited by a guest editor: the legendary Mike D of the (Aw mom, you’re just jealous) Beastie Boys! In addition to his decades-long influence on music, street, and popular culture in general, Mike has long been involved with the contemporary art world, and recently curated an acclaimed show for MOCA LA. The long list of artists from the music, surf, skate, film and art world Mike has brought on board for #43 is certifiably insane: Spike Jonze, Method Man, Ryan Sheckler, Dustin Yellin, Sage Vaughn, Simone Shubuck, Rob Machado, and Rodney Mullen to name but most of them.

MEXICO PLAYLISTS WITH MIKE D AND SPIKE JONZE
Every surf trip needs a playlist. A set of no more than 15 songs that just get blasted on repeat as you drive up and down the coast….

Checking one spot then another, and another, then another because Tommy thinks it’ll be working with this wind, but isn’t. Then you check a few more only to end up back where you began two hours prior. Without a surf, and now hungry.

Our Baja surf story in issue #43 was no different. Two cars with two crews lead by our guest editor Mike D and Spike Jonze, spawning two unique playlists.

Here’s who were in the cars and this is what they listened to. For the full story, pick up a copy of issue #43 and if your onto it, you already have Beats Music and can listen to these playlists and a tonne more at here.

Definitely some interesting tidbits in there

lol.

never has an invite to a party in Tokyo annoyed more people on a message board until now.

what I got from the issue, and from those links and his many projects, is very obvious and clear- he is moving in a totally different direction, very busy in the art and design world, food and wine blah blah blah.

he is still an icon for music, surf, and skate culture, and he will continue to support those causes with his full passion. he mentions he spends plenty of late hours in the studio.

he talks about the band (and Yauch) in this issue many many times, in a nostalgic way that seems to create some distance.

it is clear that he is still suffering deeply but trying to be a good dad.

he also designed another nixon watch. does that piss people off?

Some people need to whine and bitch about something. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm pretty sure Mike D isn't losing and sleep over message board members being pissy pants because Mike isn't doing the things they want him to.

They gave us music from '82 to '11. I'm pretty ok with Adrock and Mike living life and doing whatever the fuck they want to do.

that's really cool. and his quotes just solidified everything. very poignant.

I love what he said about new challenges and creativity, and obviously saying that he and his bandmate are stuck together forever.

the 1982-? is a symbolic way of staying true to himself, from his own lyric book.

I got this thing yesterday. (They forgot my socks.) It's completely worth the money. Mike D talks about his imdb credit for the 1984 soft-core porno, Over Exposed. There are classic Ari Marcopolous photos of the Beastie Boys and an entire section on Josh Cheuse that's full of classic 80s NY hip hop and punk photos. Even comes with a really great photo print.

It's kind of a better-financed, less DIY version of Grand Royal Magazine. I vote that I liked it.

Mike on Triple J. (http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/zan/blog/s4033853.htm)

Can't stream this at the moment, but I'd be interested in what he says about his musical future.

This whole integrated media thing is interesting, especially in the absence of a single lick of music to promote. He's an icon.

I hope Adrock becomes to luxury recliners what Mike is becoming to art and fashion.

I checked a random newsstand and they had the one with the red cover with Mike on the drum kit. (I got the yellow one and kind of prefer the red one better) it's listed at $10

I had to find it myself near the skate magazines as the owner thought I was weird when I said 'do you have Monster Children?'
