I haven't listened to The Scoop in years. Forgot how dope it is. The beat changes are sick, and the boys come with some unique (for them) flows.
That is all.

I always thought that song has an epic beat, too bad I can't find the instrumental anywhere. It's very similar to the beat introduced at 1:26 in the song "B-boys making with the freak freak". awesome tunes!

plus the scoop has some very unique rhyme techniques and dope lyrics. one of my IC favorites no doubt.(y)

Quickie transcribe from the commentary track...

Ad-Rock: Yo what happened to this song? I like this music a lot.
MCA: Yeah I love this bassline.
Mike: I know, we should do this song live. This is a really good track. Didn't we discuss doing this track live? Did that possibility ever get raised with the media?
Ad-Rock: I don't know if the media got behind this story.
(lots of listening)
Yauch: I think Mario came with this loop, this bassline loop. I forget where it's from. I think it's actually Ron Carter - oh no no no, I'm mixing it up, that's actually the Pass The Mic bassline is Ron Carter playing on somebody's else's record.
Mike: I'm trying to remember, I have this record too - I feel like it is Ron Carter playing on somebody's else's record, but I could be wrong. We need to get Mario C. on the horn.
Ad Rock: I can't remember. Eluding me. I'm seeing a few different records right now in my head. Richard Evans.
Mike: Oh?
Ad Rock: Johnny Hammond record...
Mike: It could be Richard Evans, it's not Johnny Hammond, like you're thinking of the Breakthrough album?
Ad Rock: Anyway...
(more listening - up to "blast off the Grasshoff a while it's been")
Mike: This part's really nice, I gotta say. I don't even remember this loop.
(all crack up laughing at Mike's line "like I was David Koresh here")
Ad Rock: (laughing) What?
Yauch: (Nelson Muntz-style) Ha-ha!
Ad Rock: Haven't heard this tune in a long time. What did you say about David Koresh? That's crazy!
Yauch: People looking at me like I was David Koresh. Funny.
Mike: People look at me funny still to this day, Adam. That's what I'm subject to, you know? You being whatever, an esteemed act-or, you get a different reaction from people.
Yauch: Accolades?
Mike & Ad Rock: Yeah.
(outro)
Yauch: I played this for my dad, and he heard Lee Perry there, the 'this is rough and tough' thing and he said 'I like that!'
Ad Rock: You guys have one song.
Yauch: You guys have one part on one song on your album. One snippet. What's the next cut?

Top 5 all time for me. On certain days, it's my favorite Beastie Boys song.

for sure one of their most underrated and one of my favorites. perhaps in my top 5 which i just realized is actually impossible to settle upon. great track and it really stands up better over time than perhaps other tracks do from any album.

That is real nice.
I have half a mind to set the comment thread straight on the origin of the bassline but that would feel dickish/not cool.

noway. If you do it with respect you'll be turning them onto a cool song they can discover and appreciate. It's what the Bboys did for us.

edit: Also, yes The Scoop is the shit.

It's Cedar Walton "Jacob's Ladder"

Looks like Tony Dumas, whom I've never heard of before, on the bass. Learn something new every day.
