View Full Version : My cat is dying

and there's not really anywhere I can talk about it. This is the female cat the ex-wife and I had, but she became so rad when it was just she and I. She's severely anemic, and at first we were treating for a blood infection. She had a mild stroke on Tuesday and things were so dire she had to have a transfusion of dogs blood to buy her time. I was going to put her down at that stage. Any exertion nearly kills her so she's just chilling under a blanket and we're giving her lots of attention and love.

I'd hoped her red blood cell count would have been up, but apparently it's right back to where it was when she was taken in for lethargic behaviour last Friday.

I know there are bigger issues in the world, and at 10 years old she's had a good trot, but being unable to help my little mate is just killing me. She's eating raw egg and drinking milk, still using her litterbox so I guess I'll see how that goes before the inevitable decision.

Be good to your pets.

that is some heart wrenching news, sounds like she kept you company when you needed her most.

and now she's counting on you to care for her.

be true to your pets and you will never fall.

Thanks guys. It was nice to be able to write it down. Puss is still with us, following the disheartening news that her red blood cells hadn't increased. In fact, she is now chowing down on mad bbbq chicken and drinking milk and being a bit of a jerk - all of which is positive.

She has ataxia now from oxygen deprivation, so even when she feels like standing up (which isn't often) she is pretty unsteady. So if she pulls through, she's going to be a bit special, I think. What this means for us is the cat just lays on a blanket with bowls of milk and water around her, and we shred chicken onto a paper towel for her to roll towards and feast upon. She's like Jabba the Hutt, now. Never really needs to bother doing anything for herself, it seems.

So yeah, ridiculousness abounds in even being sad, but for better or worse I will be sad when she goes. It has been a good couple of days, though.

That stinks.

If she doesn't really recover, I hope you get time to say goodbye.

My 2nd boxer passing was more stressful than a 10 hour deposition. I have a 3 rd boxer now and the pain has passed

Still going. Getting stronger and noisier, but I think the kidneys are a problem, which isn't great. All of us in the house are just enjoying the time together. Vet says to keep going, for now.

Hey so still going. Strictly an indoor cat from here on out, but even the vet was surprised. Outside of cancer, nothing ostensibly caused all this. So it's just a case of trying to put weight back on her. We all understand each other now; said our goodbyes and now it's quite a nice, honest pet-having experience. Cat has definitely aged, but all the wobbly ataxia stuff is gone. I know she'll die someday; it was all pretty brutal how it happened.

I started this thread just because I was bummed, and the 'real' world of social media doesn't care about a cat, so it was nice to share it here. Thanks guys.

Enjoy your precious time with her!(y)

Cats rock. We said goodbye to our second old cat last August. We were heartbroken; I thought no cat could replace her.

We now have two 8-month old kitties buzzing around the place.
