View Full Version : I found the Too Many Rappers video!

Hey guys and gals, I rarely post on here but I believe I made a major discovery this evening. While on a bus journey watching the credits of the "Don't Play No Game" video on my iPad I spotted the name Neal Usatin. Recognising it from his previous work on Oscilloscope Labs projects I Googled the name to see what else he had worked on. During my digging on his website 'sweetcutz.com' I found his online résumé which curiously listed a credit on the unreleased "Too Many Rappers" video, directed by Roman Coppola. Further digging unearthed the treasure we have been looking for these past few years, thought by some to not even exist. To me this is the biggest news from the boys since that sad, fateful day in 2012. So here it is, my fellow Beastie heads! Please enjoy, it's better than I could have ever imagined!

Best find ever -- super thank you. This is an amazing video revealed and found. It was privately listed in September 2013 (see below). I cannot determine when it became public. If someone could rip it quickly before it becomes private again that would be amazing.

that was great to see! thanks! I wonder if that was pre-production? It must have been done the same time of Bonneroo performance Still has the MCA verse before they decided to change it from the touchy subject matter too.think that might explain why it wasn't released?
Anyways, thanks again for the find of the last few years! that's one of the things mentioned in the vault thread that's now checked off. How can we download this before it gets pulled? I made an iphone video of it off screen lol

Man I can't believe this has been sitting on the internet undiscovered for some amount of time. What a find.

Been looking forward to this video ever since that photo came out of them rapping in the supermarket. Really great video, full of the signature Beasties lofi video aesthetic but with some cool additions.

It's a shame it didn't drop at the time, it would have been great promotion for the album. Although I guess Make Some Noise with all the guests was in some ways a much bigger intro.

Pretty damn great anyhow!

Bittersweet but glorious. A great video - all I ever want is the three of them delivering to a roaming camera, it's unbreakable.

And still (in my opinion) the superior version of TMR.

I am impressed the media picked up the story pretty fast.

In the newly unearthed clip, the Beasties and Nas run around a grocery store and a park in search of a good time. Stream it above and count your blessings that some deep-digging Beastie Boys fan (http://bbs.beastieboys.com/showthread.php?t=99988) found it (h/t Stereogum (http://www.stereogum.com/1728669/watch-beastie-boys-nas-unreleased-too-many-rappers-video-directed-by-roman-coppola/video/)).

Let's hope there is so much more like this waiting to be discovered.

Thank you Beasties.
Thank you Yauch. You are eternally missed.

If I preferred the og version I'd be pissed off, too. But how cool is it that there is a video and it's this good?!!?

Very classy of the Boys to upload it to their channel for reals too. It'd have to be hard for them, and I assume Mrs Yauch also had to give the ok so this is very cool fan service, pretty true to MCA's form.

I think the original makes heaps more sense with the video, and it's obviously sad that it never came out properly and all of the other horribleness that followed. What I also realised is that this video narrows the race between TMR and Get it Together, because each has what the other doesnt. Buzzy.

My bad - wasn't clear: Get it Together has in-studio kicking it lulz vibe which accentuates the chemistry on the track but has no video; TMR has a video, which completely elevates the track and more than compensates for the lack of an organic in-studio recording session with Nas. Each has what the other doesnt: one has the guest in their lab while the other has the guest hanging out and getting in on the act in a pretty sweet film clip.

Good point. Although I'd like to mention that Get it Together does have a sweet Lollapalooza performance full of said chemistry and lulz. I like to think that its the unofficial video of sorts.

i mean don't get me wrong, i'm probably one of the too many.. if you can even call my ish rapping, but i don't subscribe to that one song in the beasties repatroire (sp), and that just never happens... wtf chuck

maybe nas consumates the meaning of too many rappers as he would be one.. did the beasties just play him like that so he and people learn eventually, or was it really a song they wanted to appeal to the dirty south ish... keep hip hop clean my friends...

i won't leave ya behind, but..
i guess the slowest kid sets the standard these days...
doped up and dumbed down
not a good place for kids
not allowed to think outside the box..
what's there not to understand?
i don't think you've been paying attention..
i may only have 2 years of college, but i know bs when i see it.
that's what's wrong with the country... we're setting examples now like taht?
you have to be a cutthroat, crack dealing, thug to make it or be an emcee these days?
i don't know what you're trying to say, all i'm saying is that it's not so cool to me.

This is an awesome find! Sick research skills Eoin MCL!

If anyone has a copy of this (mp4, avi, whatever) or a link to a place where I can download it, I'd be much obliged. I have a feeling it's gonna get yanked down from various YouTube channels as they are uncovered. Could be wrong, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. PM me if you want to be that gracious human being!

Also, just as a side note, I think it's really just.... I dunno, interesting how Yauch's first verse changed between the video version (or pre-album release version I guess) and the version that ultimately appeared on HSCP2. He makes a reference to never dying on the video version, but that verse was cut by the time the album came out.

I've been listening to the album version a lot lately and I forgot about that original verse. It was nice to hear him say it again. Living on and never dying through his music.

The album version says "Like a nexus 6 coming home to roost" so it's actually about dying. I thought that was super brave, fucking deep and a really poetic way for him to commit that idea to wax.

Indeed, the Nexus-6 had a short lifespan, but they were a definitely fighters until the end.

"Like all replicants, they had a limited lifespan, the Nexus-6 being genetically designed to have a very short lifespan of just a few years."

and

"Nexus 5's and 4's would normally just give up when cornered, but 6's never stop fighting to stay alive"

I don't recall who it was, but somebody else on the boards (at least i think it wasn't me) made the connection a few years ago.

Wasn't this recorded before he knew he was sick?

Good point. According to Wikipedia the song was recorded in 2008 and Yauch was diagnosed in 2009. Although Yauch was sick a few months before being diagnosed so perhaps that fact triggered those lines somehow. I recall purchasing the Record Store Day 12 inch of Too Many Rappers in 2009.

That Nexus 6 line isn't on the 2009 version that came out before he was sick. It's only on the 2011 album version where he altered his verse (presumably after he found out about being sick).

2009 Version

Yo, I been in the game since before you was born
I might still be MCing even after you're gone
Strange thought, I know, but my skills still grow
The 80s, the 90s, 2000s, and so
On and on until the crack of dawn
Until the year 3000 and beyond
Stay up all night, and I MC and never die
Cause death is the cousin of sleep

2011 Version

Like a Nexus-6, comin' home to roost
Handheld 58 when it's time to get loose
Don't need the ear goggles, just put me through the speakers
Like a scientist with tubes and beakers

Have MCs over my house and fix 'em brunch
But you rappers? We goin' out, goin' dutch
So pass me the sword, I'll start swingin'
Just randomly chopping on a crazy ass mission
