Career opportunities…

The kind that comes and knocks…have you ever pushed for the next rung in the organizational ladder?...for the past year I’ve been advocating for myself with regards to a new position in a very exciting branch of my field…and I just got a call to go and sit for a first meeting with H.R…more money, office, new attire, heavy clout…the real grown up shit…all of a sudden I am sick with anxiety, my stomach is in knots now that change has a serious potential to impact me…it’s just occurring to me how comfortable I’ve become and I’m questioning myself…anyone been through a similar scenario….did you grab the brass ring?...how did it play out, how anxious were you?...I feel nauseas...really…I do…

Re: Career opportunities…

i am starting to get close to the point where i think i can really make some pushes. outside of the management guys in the place, we don't really have anyone with the same skill set that i have, so that is nice in a way.

i've been trying to broaden my range of projects and have been pushing to get as many random certifications and such that will only help me later on. was real hopeful to do this bridge inspection course last month, but i got aced out of the spot by some new girl that the new boss brought along with him. she was probably idling around the office while i was actually on a real project, so she got the go ahead.

once i have that though, i could be a commodity to any place around town. (y)

My last day at my current position is tomorrow. I too have recently reached out to move up a rung. I am starting with a new company in a higher positiuon March 15th. I have a shiny new office and 20% more pay. This job is contingent on finishing my MBA. I have about a year left.

I was never once jittery or anxious duringthe i nterview process, it was mainly waiting for the offer to be extended ....

I don’t sweat interviews…I have style for miles…it’s the idea of change…change of environment,change of location,change of colleagues,change of routine….and additional responsibility…that has me tweakin…

I'm gettin older in my years
Feel me?
I got a folder worth of fears
But it's cool,we gotta make it better
Don't take my sweater
y'all make my head hurt
I ain't even gonna finish this song, it's too long
I'ma watch Cops, in my La-Z-Boy, in my thong

Re: Career opportunities…

Well they offered,I countered, they matched and I accepted...i start in the office tommorow...a good sleep not likely tonight...I'm packing all my belongings into a cardboard box just like on T.V!...taking down my art...the only thing I'm missing is a ratty house plant and coffee mug to complete the transient office box picture...here we go!

What's your new benefit plan like compared to the old one??

MC Moot 03-02-2010 05:52 PM

Re: Career opportunities…

The benefit package remains the same...5 weeks holiday's,12 sick days...it's a really strong package 100% dental (Including emergency and out of country) and 87% vision...$500 each in expenditures for massage, physio, counselling services,accupuncture...they nixed chiro last year but I've never used it...it is the end of the free lunch era...basically it's a 9% raise with 10 hours less a month...best part is the new office is accesible by a bike/pedestrian path that runs along the river and starts about a block from my house,so the commute will serene and green...no traffic, just the river and trees…

i wish i got 5 weeks! sounds pretty rad man (y)

not that it effects my status, but i just found out one of our techs got let go more or less because the new manager of my department wants to get his two lady employees (whom he brought with when he started with my company) some work instead. kinda feel sorry for the guy. he wasn't the brightest lad, but he dealt with the retarded construction workers pretty well.

i'd love to see these ladies in action while a bunch of hardened concrete finshers stare down the cracks of their asses (y)

I've got nowhere to go in my job, unless the owners make me a business partner. I kinda just want to start my own business though.

What sort of business do you want to start? This is something I would like to do to. Only problem being I haven't a clue as to what sort of business to open.

art installation. I already do it occasionally, based on referral. It's pretty lucrative, but not exactly stable. If I took steps to make it more of a legit business, I could probably make a decent living working very few hours.

I'm just scared.

yeahwho 03-03-2010 02:27 AM

Re: Career opportunities…

That would be cool, to install art. Anything in the creative field would be great for you.

I'm completely the most imaginative person at work now, which has made me also one of the more valuable employees, I'm never satisfied with the status quo and constantly looking for ways to improve upon all aspects of my industry using practicability as a criteria. Plus staying positive.

I have the time and energy for a business, I've brainstormed up a few good ideas but have yet to put them into practice. Your only as good as your level of acceptance for failure is. I have to work on that a bit more before I risk starting my own business.

Re: Career opportunities…

yeah, I just worry about people trying to be jerks and fuck me over. that's what I'm mostly scared of...going to someone's house and them not wanting to pay when the work is done or maybe murdering me or something...I dunno.

meh, I just want to make some money doing what I like to do, and what I'm good at. I just have way too many ideas and no focus. I just started doing comedy writing and will take part in producing a variety show for fun (unpaid), so that's either gonna be a big waste of time (but still fun), or could lead to bigger things (wishful thinking).

and there's my art/design business that I dabble in...bleh. I really should do the installation thing though, I could make more money working 6 hours a week doing that, than working the full time job I have now. so I'd have oodles of time to do other things. *sigh*

You and about a half of a dozen others on this board could write one of the most funniest fucked up situational comedies ever.

at the moment I'm experiencing some saturn rising type shit. Berlin is a great place to avoid maturity, perhaps too great.

the word career still freaks me out a little though.

well here we are...the office is very nice...no organizational structure apparent...but nice peeps so far...windows everywhere...no fridge!...I'm calling the labor relations board...I'm sure there was a clause in my contract that specified I have adequate storage for yogurt, cheese and dairy amongst other perishables...the nerve...but there was strudel this morning...downside there are alot of smokers here...I was hoping for a clean slate with no one to partake in the wicked weed with...damn...

I have come to the realization that my new gig is not all that far from working at Glengarry Glen Ross…this why 8 of the 12 people here smoke like fiends…the stress on the housing locaters is off the wall…and you know what?...I don’t think they like me…yet…hard to believe, yes?...I am perceived as a threat…an auditor, evaluator, efficiency seeker…if I join them for a cigarette they all go silent…awkward…I’ve always been popular…damn…I will by pizza for all on Friday and see if that doesn’t win some comradery from them…otherwise…COFEE IS FOR CLOSERS!

^really?...Pacino,Baldwin,Spacey,Harris,Arkin and Lemmon's greatest role...it's wicked and good...Looking on the bright side...the Bernard Callebaut factory is directly across the street and has an amazing Belgian patisserie in it…but the only other place for eats’ nearby is Arby’s…

Re: Career opportunities…

I just came back from a forced eviction with the cops…it was unreal…there was 11 people in a 2 bedroom basement suite…full on crack/flop house…it was like watching circus clowns come out of a car or rats from a sinking ship…they had knocked a whole in the wall installed a fake panel over it and 3 beds under the stairs for the working girls…one couple was in flagrante…another room had 4 in one bed…paraphernalia everywhere…pipes, graters, digi scales, burnt tinfoil, straws, prescription meds, porn, sex stuff…cops plastic cuffed them all and the tossed the place like a hurricane….I was the 3rd person in the door after the cops… I feel totally amped…soooo happy that that community/neighborhood will be at peace tonight…what a crazy rush!...I do believe I am buzzed with adrenaline…this gig is becoming interesting now…
