Ignorant about pro sports question:

Do pro players who go on to be coaches usually do well or no?

This comes from: I've heard Gretzky has been disappointing as a coach, and I'm not so sure about Ron Wilson, but I don't know enough
to tie the laces of an opinion...

of all the coaches that were players, it seems that the superstar players aren't really all that great at coaching while the average players are better coaches. atleast in the nba

In proper football its a hit and miss ratio for successful players being managers. Some have done both but the teams who have had continued success have been managed by managers with less than distinguished playing records.

I read this one trainer's theory that people who aren't star athletes (but are trained athletes) have had to compensate by
learning more strategy, management, training, etc. than "natural" athletes do.

That's true to an extent.

Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson & Isiah Thomas have been horrible coaches & GM.
Larry Bird, Jerry West, Bobby Clarke, & Mario Lemieux have all enjoyed great success at it.
Babe Ruth would have given up all his records he ever achieved just to be given a chance to manage a MLB team. He was never given the opportunity because he was shit at managing his own life, let alone a team.

There's really no correlation from athlete to coach.
It's an acievement unto it's own.

Rick Barry wants to coach, but was known as a loner and maligner as a player, so no one gives him a chance.
