i have now printed this out and it has pride of place on my base unit at work. I thought it was bloody hilarious but the percentage of laughs from other people at work is surprisingly low. Some younger people had little clue about ghostbusters, some people didnt know who venkman was, worringly a lot of people didnt know what a venn diagram was and some were all three of the above. I have had to explain it a lot. I despair. but it still makes me smile(y)

I may be missing the joke here but I thought the Ghostbusters were not afraid of ghosts, but the diagram shows that they are only not afraid of a small subset of the ghosts, the majority of the ghosts (in blue) being frightening. Shouldn't the blue ghosts circle be entirely within the red circle?

I only saw the movie once when I was little so I am probably missing the gag.

Or is the person saying the Venkman is both a ghost, and something that the drawer of the diagram is not afraid of?

i'd guess that the idea would be that ghosts are generally things to be afraid of, but if you're a ghostbuster you aren't afraid of them.

although i guess there must be a lot of other things that ghostbusters are afraid of

It's a function of conditionality. Subset A ("Things I ain't afraid of") intersects with Subset B ("Ghosts") only under the condition of Venkman's presence.* Under all other conditions they fail to intersect and Subset B lies outside Subset A.

*Other Ghostbusters (ie Spengler) could theoretically fulfill this condition as well.

Surely it's a pun on the double negative implicit in the theme song. "I ain't afraid of no ghost..." implies that the subject of the song is not afraid of no ghost, so is not afraid of the lack of ghost, but would be afraid of the presence of a ghost. However, if you consider the song in terms of popular parlance "I ain't afraid of no ghost" (where 'no' is substituted for 'any') reverses its meaning and thus the venn diagram illustrates the ambiguity of the lyrics of the song.

it doesn't really make sense, but I guess that's why it's a Venk diagram, not a venn diagram.
