tattoo advice, design help needed.

ima get a tattoo of my grandma's name and the finnish word for grandma. but I want to use a cool font, not a stupid one.

does anybody know of any good fonts that I may not have heard of?

also, any interesting placements? (above the waist, cheeky monkeys)

Re: tattoo advice, design help needed.

something with flowing script would be nice, maybe with a hint of floral?

I wouldn't go san serif, too stoic

you have skills, draw it out

and I would suggest the shoulder....arm tattoos on girls are eh and anywhere else (belly button/chest area, small of back) gets too close to sexy time

I have yet to get a tattoo

but finns are stoic!

no floral for me, but script might work. I just can't really think of anything right now. I was going to write it out in my own stylized script, but it looks weird.

I kinda want forearm or wrist, but my mom would kill me.

agh.

ya, I was going to do isoäiti, but now I think I'm going to get just her first name.

and I haven't decided on placement, but I want to do simple script, embroidery style with finnish blue "thread".

might get a stylized hammer with isoäiti "carved" in the handle also. she liked to build things. I'll put that one on my forehead.

also, re: comic sans,

so you know re: comic sans.

It was a obvious joke - I hate all use of that font, I think any1 who uses it in anything should have their computer taken away from them

Sorry, if it was in bad taste. Wasn't meant to be. Well it was but it wasn't meant to be offensive. :o

C'mon guys be serious, everyone knows that 'sand' is where it's at.

Anyway ms Wood, go to a parlour and ask the artist for examples of fonts that they are comfortable to use. Many of them (worth anything) with show you examples of fonts they have created or indeed their own 'handwritten' type work. Don't just scour a font site for whatever looks good. You will just end up with a traced up printout on your body that will look too clinical and clean.

(Not examples of good tattoos or fonts, but I think the first one just sits awkwardly)

I would if I could, but it is really bad.

camo, I like that script...but is no very scandinavian. I guess I was asking for fonty advice as something to jump from, it wouldn't be something I'd put down as is.

also, sand is the worst font! I can't believe it's used ever. it doesn't even look like sand. actually, I hate curlz font more.

what about yours?

AceFace 02-23-2009 02:25 PM

Re: tattoo advice, design help needed.

are you designing your tattoo yourself? if you are then awesome! if you're not, then maybe give the tattoo artist and idea of what you want and see if they can come up with something amazing. you might not even have to worry about "font". i know they usually don't use that word in the tattoo world. it's just lettering. and some can be more difficult than others.

mine's pretty bad, but I can make it look okay with effort. my mom has beautiful handwriting though, it must skip a generation.

ultimately, I think it might be best to find a tattoo artist who will come up with something cool that incorporates the thread, and hammer as well. I don't know how much that costs though. as much as I'd like to design something, I would be disappointed if it wasn't executed exactly as I had imagined. so it might be better to have the tattoo artist design it. meh.

No no no nooooo I meant that the 'handwritten' look was nicer than the sterile looking type one.

I think Kenny Guido uses sans in his flyers.
