Actually Dorothy is right. Picture the cartoon and caption exactly the same, except with straw hats instead of turbans, watermelons instead of rifles, and gleeful black guys with huge lips instead of gleeful Arab guys with huge noses. That shit would never fly, and rightly so, because such unsightly and prejudiced caricatures are supposed to be a thing of the past when it comes to even moderately intelligent political discourse.
It seems however that this cartoonist has missed that particular boat - even if he never intended to associate Barack Obama with a monkey, surely if he had any brains it might have occurred to him that a metaphor involving a monkey is going to be perceived differently under an African-American than under Bush. But brains don't seem to be a real strong point for this clumsy, hamfisted hack anyway. Just another example of why the right was so soundly rejected by the American voter in the last two election cycles.
