Yeah, it's been around for a while. Santana, Funkadelic, Parliament. The Doors used a ton of old traditional styles mixed with rock. Queen with the opera. Even the Beach Boys were a mix of the Chuck Berry rock n roll with the vocal harmony groups. You could go back to the Boswell sisters and the early jazz trying different things. I think the Beasties' thing was to basically take the hybrid/mix creative philosophy as far as they could, seeing it in an infinite way, just using whatever sounds good.
