Shit!

I really don't listen to enough new music. I should hang my head in shame. Maybe I should get with this whole downloading thing at last (or just get my cashflow in order)?

I loved the Mix Up and the Bad Brains' 'Build a Nation' was sweet.

I quite liked Icky Thump, Neon Bible, and that Black Kids EP is getting played quite a lot this last few weeks. Umm, I can't seem to recall any really mindblowing albums this year (TMU was real nice but not overly radical) - probably just my memory being shit! I haven't heard that Radiohead thing yet and have only heard a little bit of MIA's LP. I'm looking forward to the Portishead album that's apparently dropping next year - although I don't anticipate any great shocks from it.

I could do with a few really solid Hip Hop albums to freshen me up - I know there's stuff out there but I find I mainly just play loads of different singles.

I'm listening to Prefuse 73's recent 'Preparations' LP quite a bit I guess.

Kala - MIA
Version - Mark Ronson
Graduation - Kanye
I'll Sleep When you're Dead - El-P
Weekend In The City - Bloc Party
American Gangster - Jay Z
8 Diagrams - Wu
and he just pointed to the sky - Peder (prunes)
The Return of the Magnificent - Jazzy Jeff

Gareth, I fucking love Umbrella too. I'm gonna slide a piece about it being a euphemism for face-sitting into my anecdotes. Biggest missed opportunity has to go to The Mix Up; could have been the singing-and-playing Check Your Head.

I remember enjoying these enormously:
BRMC - Baby 81
Beastie Boys - The Mix-up
Timo Räisänen - Love will turn you around
QOTSA - Era vulgaris
José Gonzales - In our nature
Grinderman - Grinderman
Edwyn Collins - Home again

I've listened to waaaaay to little to Icky Thumb, In Rainbows and Cucaracha to give honest opinion... and they're all done by some of my favourite bands... or Foo Fighters' latest for that matter... These are just some that I can remember off hand, haven't gone through my collection nor this year's releases yet.

Still haven't gone through lots of albums released this year, but I dug the albums from the following:

Arcade Fire
Bruce Springsteen
M.I.A.
Spoon
Wilco
The White Stripes
Queens of the Stone Age
Radiohead
Air
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
The Long Blondes (well, released in '06, but I don't think it made it over here 'til '07, so I'll count it)
The National
LCD Soundsystem
"Across the Universe" soundtrack
The Shins

And who says new music is dead?

Droppinscience and Calimero Jr both have very similar purchase list's as mine though....

Beirut - Flying Club Cup
Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Futur
LCD Sound System - Sound Of Silver

I bought (with one exception, which should be obvious) and liked these

Tegan and Sara - The Con
Kanye West - Graduation
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Beastie Boys - The Mix Up
Against Me! - New Wave
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
The Nightwatchman - One Man Revolution
Bad Brains - Build a Nation

The only other 2007 release I can think of that I bought (I don't really download albums) is The Good, The Bad, and The Queen. It's alright, but I basically bought it because I love The Clash and Paul Simonon plays on it. It's not a bad album, but I never listen to it. I will surely catch up with the greats of 2007 over the next couple years when a bunch of them are cheaper. I currently have a copy of Thurston Moore's "The Trees Outside the Academy" coming to me and I still need to get Feist's "The Reminder."

If this is gonna be that kind of party, I'ma stick my dick in the mashed potatoes!

That's a good one. I can't believe they found such a quality recording.

I tried a lot of new stuff that I didn't like, and I bought a lot of CDs by female artists that I never felt like listening to (Feist, Linda Thompson, Bjork, Lucinda Williams, Amiina). The Arcade Fire CD was okay. I never listened to the NIN one. I didn't care for the Beasties' instrumental one at all. I even tried Justice but it's not my bag.

This was my year for pleasant sounding music that's not remotely challenging I guess:

Wilco
Travis
Radiohead
Apples in Stereo
Sigur Ros (this will probably be my most-played CD of 2007 because I can write papers while I'm listening to it over and over)

I've really enjoyed the last 3 or so Lucinda Williams albums. Initially, I may have just bought into the hype a little, but she's actually a very consistent artist.

I don't think I've really liked any Travis albums since The Man Who, though. And once I gave it a proper listen, the Arcade Fire album really started to grow on me. Took a little time, I guess, which usually doesn't work for me.

But I agree with you on the NIN/Beastie/Justice albums. Couldn't get into them. I tried. My attention span is really short these days. I need instant satisfaction. Which is probably why my favorite single of the year is still Umbrella....ella....ella...
