I don't understand the appeal of Scarface.
Someone want to try and explain exactly what it is (they think) I'm missing?
Before we get started here, I would like to state for the record that Travis Bickle would tear Tony Montana to shreds in a fight (gun or fist) every day of the week and twice on Sunday. |

Montana didn't take any shit. That's what I think most people who hang pictures of him in their office or home connect with. He's a symbol for many things, but I think most connect with that.

Re: I don't understand the appeal of Scarface.
i think it's mostly gangster wannabes that love it, he's exactly what they wanna be. hustling up from being a nobody to being a kingpin and then dying young. those idiots love that kind of stuff
al pacino is awsome in it though. at the risk of sounding like i don't know what i'm talking about, he transforms also i know i've already made a thread about it but this montage and song are the 80's |

I'll have to remember that. Next time I see a kid with a Scarface shirt on I'll mention the excess.

Re: I don't understand the appeal of Scarface.
well, I would venture to say that Scarface is also a tale of alienation.
obviously, running around telling people to fuck themselves and not even flinching when your buddy gets sliced up with a chainsaw and stabbing and shooting and then blasting your nose with coke is totally awesome...but it didn't seem like Tony was ever happy. He just seemed mean and greedy and annoying. I suppose he was a little charming when he wanted to marry michelle pffeifer. but yeah, the music is hilarious, and eventually his whole world comes crumbling down because of his greed. he's not a hero, so I don't really understand why people like the character or the movie so much. there's so much foreshadowing, you know what's going to happen eventually. if anything, michelle pffeifer was the bad ass, she just got to sit around doing whatever she wanted and got out when she realized it was a stupid life. also, her sunglasses were fucking hot. I want them. so, I don't think you're missing anything. I'm confused as well. |

I don't see what's not to get? ^^This is pretty much it. ^^ It was his rise from being less than nothing, an illegal refugee who went from washing dishes in some taco stand to hustleing his way to making duffle bags full of cash. It was the way he ruthlessley stabbed anyone he had to to climb up the next rung on the drug dealing ladder that most people who like the character admire. It wasn't about how good he could fight, it's all about his business-sense. The fact that he was "New-money" and tacky as hell appeals all the more to the Hip-Hop community who idolize this character. |

My saying that Travis Bickle could beat Tony Montana in a fight was more an illustration of that character's superior anti-hero quality than anything. |

Re: I don't understand the appeal of Scarface.
Its all in the name of the movie. Thats the appeal. Scarface. Because his face was scared so they descided to name it that. Not "Miami Gangster" or "No Mengs Land" or something like that.

Re: I don't understand the appeal of Scarface.
You might be on to something. I knew this group of dorks a few years back who obsessed over that movie. They'd watch it and play this drinking game where they'd take a shot every time Tony Montana says the F word. They probably don't know he dies in the end because they're passed out in their own puke 45 minutes into it. Idiots.

Are you new to the hip hop community? They're almost exactly the same as Montana as far as "new money attitude". Montana and true thugs are the same in the sense that they fall just as fast as they rise. Mostly due to their outspoken idiocy. It wouldn't be any fun if nobody knew that they had a bag full of cash. If you try and connect Scarface with The GodFather, you're missing a very big point. One controlled an empire, the other couldn't control himself.

Re: I don't understand the appeal of Scarface.
Scarface is fucking amazing. It's like an epic, three hour long, 80s themed, cocaine-filled musical with guns up the wazoo, pastel suits aplenty and dodgy accents by the bananaboatful.
Plus, Al Pacino's big hair is intense.

I never said it's the worst movie of all time. The Replacements starring Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman holds that title. I just don't believe the hype.
