Default Mix Master Mike in the studio with Kid Rock

MMM posted some photos to IG of himself on a call with Kid Rock and also some shots of himself at the mixing desk with Mr Rock.

Not the collaboration I expected.

Mike was making a lot of money on Beastie tours. I imagine he looks at it as work. To try and maintain lifestyle.

I ain't mad at it. Mike D did that story on Kid Rock for GR a gazillion years ago. Questlove had Kid Rock perform for BBoys R&RHOF induction. There is clearly some connection there. (side note, you had LL and Chuck D in the building. Missed opportunity)

am I gonna listen to it? No. Did I rock Bawitaba when it came out? yes.

I'm more bothered by the perception the MMM completely changed BBoys studio sound when he joined the band. Dude was on 8 tracks on HN. He was doing lead scratches. He wasn't building the beats and in many cases Adrock and MCA's scratches are layered w/ MMMs. He is a great live DJ - though. don't get me wrong. I prefer him to any other tour DJ they had.

Dude has to eat though and maybe he and Kid Rock have a nice surprise for us. But probably not. I would not mind being wrong on this.

Right. I think his style of scratching is so unique that it definitely has an substantial impact on the overall production, but I would disagree with anybody who says he "completely changed" their studio sound. With the exception of 3MCs and 1 DJ, I believe we was mostly lacing existing tracks. The core sound was the Beastie Boys. I would say that the Beasties took a marked turn with Hello Nasty towards a more futuristic sound, and that MMM's unique style of scratching marries exceptionally well with that production sound. The thing about Mike that makes him so exceptional is that if you know his scratching, you won't mistake him from anybody else. Very few DJs have that kind of sonic imprint.

From a touring perspective, he 100% completely changed their tour sound. I don't know how much of a hand the Beasties had in the concept of things, but he executed well and I'm not sure anybody else could have fit that bill.
