The Clash mixed up styles on their records. So did the Beatles. Led Zeppelin, too.

Yeah, it's been around for a while. Santana, Funkadelic, Parliament. The Doors used a ton of old traditional styles mixed with rock. Queen with the opera. Even the Beach Boys were a mix of the Chuck Berry rock n roll with the vocal harmony groups. You could go back to the Boswell sisters and the early jazz trying different things. I think the Beasties' thing was to basically take the hybrid/mix creative philosophy as far as they could, seeing it in an infinite way, just using whatever sounds good.

most def. wasnt suggesting bboys were the first or only, however I dont think their blatancy of style juxtapositions is oft equaled in popular music either. while groups like the clash or zeppelin might blend alot together over the course of an album, their records as a whole are still readily recognizable as "rock" records. introducing elements from other genres into a rock "stock", if you will. whereas an album like CYH or IC will pivot from pure punk, to pure hip-hop, to pure funk, etc., thus making it truly impossible to assign to a specific format.

in my opinion.

it's just 2 wheels and me, the wind in eyes...
