A friend in high school gave me a C90 cassette with The Beastie Boys Licence to ill on one side and RUN DMCs Raising Hell on the other.

- This is something completely new and you will never listen to music the same way again, he said confidently.

It was 1986 and as a cocky teenager I didn’t take him seriously. But he was absolutely right. That tape changed in so many ways my whole life.

I know that music journalists have the ability to use just that the wording a little too often, sometimes without really thinking. But this tape set for the first time the door wide for hip hop. At least for me, and it seldom left my Walkman in the school hallway in Jacob's school.

This cassette also changed what I had called rap to hip hop. And as a rather lonely modernist, with a head full of arguments about pop music, and without anyone to really share them, I could not stop listening.

This was the future. So it seemed. Everything happened almost exactly the same time: The Style Council and Robert Elms made me discover modern contemporary soul, The Pet Shop Boys and David Toop did the same for house music and the Beastie Boys and Stuart Cosgrove was the portal to New York with its hip-hop and street fashion there was no turning back from where you've gone into it.



All the pilgrimages to the Beastie Boys store for clothing label X-Large at Lafayette in New York - and whence came the furious sampled flutes on Check your head? Forever so underrated album Paul's Boutique, their ingenious magazine Grand Royal, and world domination that followed.

Somewhere in the late 1990's, Beastie Boys and me lost the connection. We grew in different directions but respect for their original offense, I will never lose.

Adam Yauch, better known as MCA, the so-handsome graying third of The Beastie Boys, lost his three-year battle with cancer on Friday. He was 47 years old and thus was the same age as me when he first received his diagnosis.

As a new father in the same generation are affected perhaps harder than the injustice and sadness of such a kind-hearted champion of Tibet's freedom - and also the father of a young daughter - snatched away before their time.

When I just the other week was unpacking a cardboard box after moving I found a small box of old photos, saved postcards and letters from long ago. At the bottom of it there was a Rolex replica from X-Large.

The battery of course, had run out since several years, the hands had stopped at a quarter to seven. But this afternoon it is me who takes it to the first best watchrepairer and wear it like an armband in memory of Adam Yauch.

This is the best version of this song I have heard. Also the video clip at 0:22 credits "Beach Boys" instead of "Beastie Boys" which is kind of fucking hilarious if you ask me.

Wait til you hear the lyric they selected for him. I guess it’s an obvious choice, but it’s yet to be matched in terms of impact. I must have listened to it a million times but it still has the power to make my heart stop.

MCA is the youngest on the list (bar one). Ouch.

“When we first met MCA and the Beastie Boys back in the early ‘80s it was almost like we were in a movie. These guys were outrageous, spontaneous, funny, loud, confident…they were so real. We thought MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D were some of the coolest cats on the face of the earth. It was just their energy. The Beasties didn’t care. They would dress up in the sweat suits [laughs]. They had the whole rebellious thing of, ‘We are who we are.’ It was the same feeling that hip-hop had. MCA and them wanted to be unique. It was like that for all of us, including Run-D.M.C. We wanted to standout; we wanted to have fun. And although the Beasties were punk rock, they were still able to be hip-hop. They weren't white rappers trying to be black. They weren't rapping about Cadillac’s and 40 ounces. They didn’t where the fat gold chains and the Godfather hats like Run-D.M.C. and Jam Master Jay did. We thought we were crazy, but MCA and those guys were crazy with their sneakers, their leather jackets, their Budweiser beer and all the stuff they did. Real recognizes real.

The Beastie Boys were giving the same feeling of hip-hop, but with a different expression. And MCA was an important part of that. His voice was incredible. It was deep, rugged, it was powerful and it demanded authority. MCA’s voice was like the flipside to Chuck D’s voice! When you listened to a Beastie Boys record, he made you say, ‘Who is this guy?’ Because Ad-Rock and Mike D had great voices, too. But they had a crazy twang and higher pitch to their sound. MCA’s voice was the father figure of the group. When you listen to the Beasties, MCA’s voice basically told everybody, ‘Y’all can think we are a joke all you want, but we are real with what we do.’

I remember touring with MCA and the Beasties on Run-D.M.C.’s Raising Hell Tour and the one we co-headlined with them, The Together Forever tour. There is one story about MCA that I always mention. I remember we were touring in Europe and the stage had gotten really wet because they were throwing beer around all over the place. So we are on the side watching the Beastie Boys’ show thinking, ‘Yo, somebody is going to bust their ass tonight.’ Sure enough, MCA slipped and flew about 20 feet in the air [laughs]. He came down real hard. We all thought he was severely hurt. We were like, ‘Yo, call the ambulance!’ But this motherfucka just gets up and keeps rapping! We were shocked. That’s the type of performer MCA was.

What is MCA’s legacy? It’s the legacy of the Beastie Boys. MCA is from a legendary group that helped change music. You can’t talk about Eminem without talking about the Beasties first. The Beastie Boys made it possible for not just Eminem to have the courage to do hip-hop, he also made it possible for Vanilla Ice, 3rd Bass, and for any white guy to pick up the mic and be accepted. They are true pioneers. And not just white rappers…black rappers should bow down to them. Because the Beastie Boys accomplished so much for the entire hip-hop culture. These rappers nowadays can’t even approach what they did. They will never do what the Beastie Boys did. They changed the world. Run-D.M.C. will always be connected with them. We traveled the world together. We laughed together, we slept in the same rooms together, we cried together, we got drunk together…we changed history together.

It’s a sad day for music, a sad day for MCA’s family and friends, and a sad day for hip-hop. But it’s all good because at least we got some Beastie Boys records we can go listen to tomorrow.—As told to Keith Murphy (@murphdogg29)

Listening to this now - thanks, Paul!

Always love listening to Huey's shows - it's so obvious that he loves his music. His tastes really shine through unlike most of the DJs on BBC radio.

It's also quite obvious how downbeat he is when he's talking about Yauch's passing at the start but once the BBoys music starts playing he cheers up and becomes his usual chirpy self - who wouldn't?

The Mets batters used beastie boys songs as their walk up songs,the giants and mariners did something similar. the UFC fight had a dedication to him, and within the past ten minutes the Madison square garden dj did something for yauch during game 4 of the knicks-heat series. I am unsure of what it was, I'm just looking on twitter, but something definitely just happened at the garden.
