Default Mike D in Visions (it's in German, sorry)

2005, December - VISIONS

It's an interview with Mike D translated into German.
I didn't know that Mike could speak German...

hmm... this interview is kinda strange. That interviewer doesn't seem to be in his best mood.
But what's amazing is that Mike never seems to lose his humour.

"Our hardest band-phase was when we got our wood-teeth because we the real ones fell out."

Anyway, thanks for posting this interview!

I'll try. But you've got to give me some time, because
when I'm back home, I'll have 2 or 3 very hard weeks.
I'll let you know...

in the beginning the interviewer asks him how he's feeling, and Mike answers that he has a cold, but he's okay otherwise.

that's about as far my german translation skills go.

All right, here's the first bit. I hope it's correct. Otherwise Mike will sue me

V: Mike, how are you today?
M: A little chilly but okay, thanks.
V: And artistically?
M: I try to figure that out at the moment. Today I tried to install the Update of my Music-Software, but I failed. So there’s not much room for art at the moment. I’m frustrated in the first place, artistically…
V: The Beastie Boys are getting 25, soon. Can you believe that?
M: Unbelievable…
V: In 1981 who would have thought about those 3 “Whitebreads” (that’s what he said in German) being the Rolling Stones of Hip Hop 25 years later?
M: We wouldn’t. If you had asked us how long we would stay together in times of “Licensed to ill”, we would probably have answered: “Perhaps a few years”. But grey hair isn’t a good subject.
V: So, it was your idea to make the record label allow only questions about the new album?
M: It’s a good tool, to avoid the unloved questions.
V: Sure. Then tell me: why should anybody buy “Solid Gold Hits”, when you bought the portfolio “The Sounds of Science” only 5 years ago and with only 2 new albums in between?
M: (sniggering) I have no idea.
V: Is that your standard answer for awkward questions?
M: No, I really don’t know. There was this idea of doing a real crème-de-la-crème-record. The previous Best-of record went more inside the band’s concept. This one’s for the dancefloor-hits. For all the people who are not interested in concepts and only want to listen to all the hits and don’t own a single Beastie Boys record. I heard there are such people…
V: Well, that sounds like Christmas-profit-making to me.
M: You got a point there. There’s only one explanation to this: we always wanted to be like Kenny Rogers, Cher, David Hasselhoff, Boz Scagg, people like that. That’s the leaders of the Greatest-Hits-League. We want to be there, too.

Now there's Part 2:

M: We always wanted to be like Kenny Rogers, Cher, David Hasselhoff, Boz Scagg, people like that. That’s the leaders of the Greatest-Hits-League. We want to be there, too.
V: That’s the artistic range in which you want to fit in?
M: Hell yes, think about it for a minute. Those people got an ego. That’s insane.
V: I think it’s amazing how timeless most of your songs sound. Was that always your intention?
M: At least not apparently. It was always about creating something consistent. You know, if you work on something for several months or even years and then go on tour with that, you want to still like it two years later. So it’s kind of egoistic as well.
V: That’s what the progress from each album to the next is about, too?
M: That’s more about being artists again: you don’t want to repeat yourself. And you want to create something you’ve never heard before. Otherwise it would be boring. Those two things have always been the energy behind our music.
V: So it was always the search for innovation?
M: In a way it was. But that’s not unusual. It’s just the nature of it: Hip Hop is renovation. The basic evolution of Hip Hop is, that from time to time there were always records, turning all the well-established stuff upside down. There’s always been those creative powers, messing up everything known as Hip Hop.
V: I don’t see that kind of evolution in the last 7 or 8 years. Seems to me that Hip Hop - with some exceptions like Outkast or Neptunes – because of it’s commercialisation remained in it’s own stigma. And even you guys returned to Old School…
M: In that way Hip Hop’s not that different to other kinds of music: the longer something remains, the more sophisticated are the different styles and scenarios. So the renewal gets more difficult all the time. Or you start to revitalize the tradition, like we did with “To the 5 Boroughs”. And even then you get surprisingly new music. Does that happen with Pop?
V: Not very often.
M: And why is that? Because Pop Music is there twice as long as Hip Hop. Now you see the development.

To be continued...
I'm sorry for the bad translation. I hope you get it anyway

3rd and last part of the Interview...

V: Have you got a favourite band-period?
M: I don’t look back like that. One important thing for us was always that what we were doing at the time was better, bigger and more self-entertaining than it was before.
V: Wasn’t there something like a difficult phase of the band? Were there times when you were thinking: it’s not working anymore?
M: Oh yes, there were times like that. The most difficult time was, when we all got wooden teeth, because our real teeth dropped out. That was quite hard. Those splinters in the tongue – we couldn’t concentrate on new lyrics, because everything was inflamed. But we were lucky to find a specialized Splinter-Tongue-Speechtrainer in India who helped us to deal with our teeth.
V: What is the difference between todays Beastie Boys and the 80’s Beastie Boys?
M: Today we got better developed genes. We are better humans, we clean our dentures thoroughly, I colour my hair more precisely and we eat better.
V: …and smoke weed just as much?
M: No, less.
V: And artistically?
M: I wouldn’t say that we are the same, but the procedures are. There are the same discussions about music and about where we want to go. The interaction is what keeps the consistence between us. Only the result is changing. That’s where we return to our genes…
V: Do you listen to your old records?
M: Sometimes…
V: Listening to “Check your Head” and knowing, that you did that, must be a good feeling.
M: It is, but you know, the only moment we thought this might be a milestone (?) was during the recording of it. Afterwards and as well today I hear points I’m thinking of: we missed the moment, we screwed it.
V: Is there something you as artists had never done before, but would like to do someday?
M: To do a firm, on-the-point 3-minute-popsong. But we’ll probably never do this, because we just aren’t that kind of band.
V: Well, “Intergalactic” was in a way close to that…
M: But “Intergalactic” isn’t a cool gambler like a Kenny-Rogers-Song.
V: How do you manage to work as a band 25 years long?
M: It’s about fighting a lot and eating together. That’s interacting a lot: like every time we fight very fiercely we get hungry. So we order something nice and the ban is broken. Suddenly you start talking reasonably again…

...and again sorry for the poor translation!
