(I could have sworn I posted this yesterday but anyway) I just picked up the paperback copy of for Whom the Cowbell Tolls. I was pleasantly surprised to see pictures in this book! They're black and white in the print version. Does the e-version have color pictures? Can't wait to read it.

I have to admit... I didn't really like this book very much. (I got it for xmas and finished it that night, the next day(?). There were two, maybe three chapters that were worth reading and honestly one of them was only kind of interesting, and it should have been mind-blowing. (I don't want to spoil it for the not-yet-reads on here)

There was one chapter that was just incredibly lazy and boring beyond measure.

The music business section was also kind of cool. I mean, I learned some stuff. But ultimately I didn't need this book, and I'm not sure I'll ever crack it open again.

Maybe I was just too excited for it, and in hindsight it'll have been worth my time. I dunno. I'm glad other people are digging it. I'll just go back to re-reading his first book on PB every other year or so.

agreed. i commend Dan Leroy for his work, but there is just too little info spread across too many pages. coulda been edited down to a single chapter and appended to the 33 1/3 in later reissues. dont understand how less info = more pages in comparison to the 33 1/3. part of me feels a little had, but i ultimately dont regret reading it i guess

was bored at work today and was browsing the book on the kindle app on my phone. there's the chapter about the group KMD that influenced the Beastie Boys' sound towards the end of recording PB/start of CYH, and it is noted in the book that KMD's demo album is pretty much impossible to find and very few have heard it. while still bored at work, I did some pretty minimal googling and found that someone's uploaded snippets of the album to youtube.

Thanks for the link. It kills.

I love that demo! It's better than anything they released. Wow, really great stuff. Do you know what year it was released?

Nice find! Just to clarify though KMD was the MC. KMD the group is the band that Zev Love X aka MF DOOM came out of. Different dudes.

Right, KMD was the MC and his DJ was Rock Master Shock, but the book makes it sound like they were going under the name KMD before Doom

That was probably the best chapter in the whole book.

That first song on the demo is the Engine #9 Wilson Pickett sample Max Perlich thought was one of the shelved Paul's Boutique tracks.

I like the visual image of him signing in to comment on an article about his band. But I highly doubt it's him.

I was thinking

(a) its Ego Trip, a well respected publication within hip hop circles I can easily see Mike reading and commenting on something Ego Trip publishes.

(b) That's a pretty insightful as far as the source for the inspiration. You'd have to be a megafan with some fairly deep knowledge of hip hop to fake a comment like that.

Wouldn't suprise me one bit if that is Mike D's true comment.

Also, nobody ever answered my question about the pictures. Does the e-book version have the pictures? If so are they in color?
