Default Amazon's description of the new book

A panoramic experience that tells the story of Beastie Boys, a book as unique as the band itself—by band members AD-ROCK and Mike D, with contributions from Amy Poehler, Colson Whitehead, Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson, Luc Sante, and more.

Formed as a New York City hardcore band in 1981, Beastie Boys struck an unlikely path to global hip hop superstardom. Here is their story, told for the first time in the words of the band. Adam “AD-ROCK” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond offer revealing and very funny accounts of their transition from teenage punks to budding rappers; their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin; the almost impossible-to-fathom overnight success of their debut studio album Licensed to Ill; that album’s messy fallout; their break with Def Jam, move to Los Angeles, and rebirth as musicians and social activists, with the genre-defying masterpiece Paul’s Boutique. For more than twenty years, this band has had a wide-ranging and lasting influence on popular culture.

With a style as distinctive and eclectic as a Beastie Boys album, Beastie Boys Book upends the typical music memoir. Alongside the band narrative you will find rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys’ New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors, and many more surprises.

I wonder if they will release Hot sauce committee part one now, as it was brought up by Mike D in the lastest Vulture interview

Funny to hear Paul's Boutique described as "genre-defying" - it's 100% hiphop.

It defied what hip hop was at the time, though.

I remember at the time playing it for others and some folks said 'what the hell is this?'. Others thought it contained too many samples. I do think "Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun" must have sounded quite unique compared to other rap singles. "Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun" appears to take the rap rock sounds from LTI and update them in significantly interesting ways. Perhaps this postmodern pastiche is what makes PB so timeless.

"A lot of record companies look at the numbers and they'll be like, 'Your first record sold 5 million and your second record sold only 800,000. What happened? You guys fell off, I think the band all feels that the record did really well. Most musicians I grew up playing music with would probably shoot me if I ever complained about selling 800,000 records."

Part of me thought it might be a working title to push pre orders in a classic under the deadline beastie kind of way.

Especially with all of the Glen Friedman teases about never-before-seen images, this title and cover reveal seems kind of underwhelming but doesn’t curb my excitement in the least.
