So whats up if I didn't sign a credit card receipt?

So I started a tab on my credit card at a bar the other day. And paid out cash. I didn't sign anything and specifically told the bartender that I was going to pay cash. Anyways, I didn't get a receipt for my cash transaction and today I noticed that I got charged at the bar on my check/credit card.
So I'm wondering if the receipt doesn't have my signature on it, are they allowed to charge me regardless, or am I fucked because I don't have a receipt for paying cash?

if you don't sign a receipt, it still charges you, due to your card agreement or something like that. if you can, talk it over with the bar...you might be screwed though

I think you're screwed b/c you didn't get a cash receipt. They are authorized to charge your card incase you leave without paying...that's what you give them the card for..to guarantee payment. Since you don't have the cash receipt, it's like you left without paying and you can't prove that you didn't. This has happened to me before. Sorry

You will get charged, but without your signature, you can contest the charges. You probably won't be successful without a cash receipt, though.

If it was a debit card, they don't need a signature....just like when you go to the store and pay with it.....

I think debit cards are only in Canada. They don't use them in the US.

Your debit cards are credit cards right? You have to sign for your debit cards.

In Canada....anyone can use a debit card as long as you have the card pin number.

that's how it works for us too, dear. you can choose to use it as a credit card if you want, or if they're not set up for atm/debit, but most places are. you punch in your pin number.

My debit card is never accepted when making a purchase...only at ATM machines in the US.

Any time i've ever asked a teller in the US if they accept debit cards, they have either never heard of a debit card before, or have never seen a debit card without the hologram, the person's name or an expiry date on the card.

Visa's are like a line of credit. You pay what you owe when you want (at least minimum payment within 30 days).

Debit cards withdraw the money directly from your bank account.

My debit card is an ATM card/Visa card. Basically, it draws money out of my checking out regardless of how it's used. Be it ATM, or swiped like a visa.

I don't know all the details on why that is, though.

from my understanding, a debit card and a check card are different but similar.

a check card works like a credit card but has no line of credit other than whats in your bank.

a debit card is the same but has overdraft protection i.e. a line of credit.

It might still be an honest mistake. If you go in there and explain the situation the person that took your money might still remember you and admit guilt.

There are two possibilities:

One: The person in question did it on purpose and will never admit it because he/she kept the money.

Two: It was a mistake in which case not only will the person probably admit it, but even if said person doesn't... there should have been more money in the register than there should have been.

Bottom line, if the boss/employees in that place are honest there is a good chance you'll get your money back.

talk with the bartender. how much was the tab? often i'll pay out a tab that's resting on a visa if i have the cash. 'round here they don't process the charges until you close out. if it's a situation where the bartender remembers you and believes your claim; but isn't in a position to correct it because the moment's passed... maybe s/he could float you a couple complimentary pitchers of beer. draft is the only thing that allows for generosity in a controlled inventory environment. it's an honest mistake and a decent bar tender will make ammends best they can.

my debit cards and credit cards work fine within the us system except when there's a storm or hurricane in the progress. then i'm left looking like a dead beat. i try to keep a decent supply of cash on my person to avoid situations like that.

I gave her $50 cash, my check card got charged $42. I'll call her/them today whenever they open. $42 isn't going to break the bank or anything....but you know.

You could call your credit card company and dispute the claim. Good luck, though -- that gets into some iffy situations.

On the plus side, I think that any credit card charge over $20 in the U.S. has to have a signature unless it's a phone or internet transaction.

that was over a year ago...i don't even remember what the bartender looked like.

Never got my money back...

I've been there 3 times since...but will never give money to them. I just have whoever's idea it was to go there pay for my drinks.
