they've been renovating it throughout the summer....which is kind of weird when you think about it. apart from the weather, what did you think of the city?

Yeah, some of the wall was still sectioned off for repainting when we went.

I liked Berlin a lot. I only had 3 days there, which wasn't even enough time to see all the things I had planned to. I just wish the weather had been a little better - we were out and about at 8 in the morning and it felt like about 5 in the evening it was so overcast and misty. We stayed in Alexanderplatz, but only saw the whole of the Fernsehturm on the last day :S

I only had two complaints - the crossing system (red for don't cross, green for cross if you want, but you're taking your life in your own hands) and the shared cycleways/pavements (getting shouted at in German by furious cycling commuters was great fun, honest).

I'd like to go back in the future, but I think I'd need to improve my German first - it's pretty basic. Good times though (y)

how did this come about?

i've never seen such a get together based on the sandwich.

Re: The Family Album

about 3 years ago some friends of mine came up with a party called "sandwich day", where everybody who comes brings a sandwich, with portions to share. they've done it every year since and it's become bigger and bigger - it's a great, simple, yet elegant idea that everybody loves because the party lasts all day and all you do is eat sandwiches and get drunk, it's a pretty big hit. this year about 40 people came, so there was a lot of sandwich

the hosts have neither the room nor desire to eat all of the leftover sandwiches (there are a lot of leftover sandwiches) so you can take home some as well. i brought home a big tupperware container of them, it was a pretty sweet deal

What would one of these 'sandwich day' parties look like exactly?

Some picturisms from the last week on a field exercise. It sucked.

There are some soldiers in this picture, see if you can spot them.

Apparently traipsing about muddy tracks is 'soldiering', no, it sucks.

After all this 'soldiering', some of us like to mess about a bit. Can you tell what it is?

And here I am after a long, cold and wet week, very dirty and pissed off sitting in a tank after driving it about a bit. Can't wait until I no longer have to do this!
