Starbucks has some Christian Organizations mad at them. There new series of coffee cup (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2005/08/28/2002455081.jpg) quotes titled "The Way I See It" is causing quite a stir with it's ability to use free speech.

Article (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002455480_starbucks29m.html) From Seattle Times, 8/29/05.

So now they figure these cups should say "The Way I See It" if your not thinking along fundamental Christian thoughts, your all fucked up for being different. When are Christians happy? I really want to know wtf business it is of these groups to interfere in marketing of coffee? Where is the outrage of the poverty levels of coffee growing communities across our globe.

Why does hatred always pervade these groups?

Sunday morning church.

That's about it what fixed weekly appointments is concerned. They have to fill the rest of the week with collectively bugging the hell out of everyone else.

I think the fact that we get to sleep in on sunday pisses them off doesn't help.

The group believes corporations have a responsibility to reflect the diversity of their customers by taking a balanced approach — or staying out of divisive social issues altogether.

so, pretty much, agree with us or shut the fuck up...(ps, when was the last time there was a truly artistic conservative?)

And while the group is not calling for a boycott, its position nonetheless raises questions about what role — if any — corporations should take on potentially sensitive matters, especially at a time when the nation is divided, largely along religious lines, on issues such as gay rights.

see above ultimatum...

"I think it's wiser for them to stay out of these issues so that they don't offend conservatives and people of faith."

considering conservatives still get offended by interracial and interfaith marriages, i don't think they should be the litmus test...

The coffee company won't be pulling the Maupin quote — or any other — from the campaign, but in fact will expand it to feature quotes from regular customers.

one point for starbucks.

"Embracing diversity and treating people with dignity is one of the guiding principles of our corporation,"

hypocritical but still, nice rhetoric.

i find this similar to the civil rights movements of yesteryears. as long as it wasn't making people feel uncomfortable in public where they could be embarassed, and that shit stayed out of sight, subsequentially, so they didn't have to think about it or try and form an opinion, it didn't bother them. no wonder taditional values are traced back to the '50s...everything was suppressed and dandy.

"I think it's wiser for them to stay out of these issues so that they don't offend conservatives and people of faith."
Uh huh, just stay out of it. Just like abolitionists should have stayed out of the slavery issue, right? And gentiles should have just sat back and embraced the Holocaust? Whites should have protested civil rights for blacks? Just stay out of it. Thank you so much for that pearl of good Christian wisdom.

That article said that Microsoft backed down to this group. That's predictable.

How stupid am I that I didn't notice the cups until it was mentioned on this board?

What complete nonsense. This is just marketing after all. I can find several ads at any given time on TV that offend me or just plain piss me off. I change the channel or don't buy their product. It's just taste. When will these people, especially whatever holy rollers they are referring to, realize that you can't legislate taste? If God be angered and hath fury, well it's Starbucks taking that chance now isn't it?

You know, it's ironic to me that people aren't more worried about what is actually in the cup, rather than on the cup.

You aren't a Christian of the fundamental, awareness and protest group starting, boycotting for silly reasons kind though... right?

That wasn't meant for you... should have specified.

Do you get to choose which cup you want?

I wonder if they will start producing Bible verses on their cups.

Didn't think so. Some gay rights group would have a field day with that one.

It really doesn't matter to me if they did put quotes from the Bible on these cups, the theme of these cups is "The Way I See It" so perhaps if they also included Bible cups with the regular cups would you then be 100% happy with the cups anyway?.....

If they did have Bible Quote cups as a choice I wouldn't care a rats behind. I think that "certain christian organizations" would still not be happy, they then would want to control the music (http://www.starbucks.com/hearmusic/default.asp?category%5Fname=Music), theme and clothing worn by the employees.

You know for 7 years I lived on the same block as a Christian Latte shop called J.C.'s ( real creative) and not once did I say to myself, "Those Fuckers had better put some Gay Pro-Chice Free Press BullShit on Their Cups, but now, today if someone were to start up the protest, I'd be all for it.

When you walk into a business in the USA expect freedom to be part of the transaction. Not religious dogma, figure it out. We live in the USA, not GWB's wetdreamland.

Yeah. Cuz no gays are interested in the Bible or religion or Jesus or any of that stuff. That's why we'll never have to worry about them trying to be ordained or anything.

Oh, wait...

It's called freedom of choice, if you don't like them choose to get your coffee somewhere else.
Go to coffee bean and tea leaf, or a local coffee shop. just about anywhere that has a starbucks probablly has a mom and pop one too. but watch out racer... it might be a gay who owns it, or worse yet a non-christian!

In-and-Out Burger has bible quotes on their cups, as well as taking out large sums of its revenue yearly to promote a non-secular chritmas. Yet you don't see anyone jumping up and down and begging to the media to have them stop.

If those Christians just turned super-Mormon, they wouldn't even have to worry about looking at faggy coffee cups in the first place, because their god hates coffee just as much as he does fudge-packers. (!)

It was a joke people, get a grip.

My only intention was to show the flip side of the argument, not cause another.

Yeah.......................but, this group isn't joking, they really do have issues,

"I think it's wiser for them to stay out of these issues so that they don't offend conservatives and people of faith." Maureen Richardson, state director of Concerned Women for America of Washington.

It's kooky and spooky.

They should open up their own christrian coffee shops then. Thats the realistic thing to do.

God's Brew
The Perky Jesus
Bible Brew
The Brew Pew
Blessed Brew

they are like people in the army or cops they need someone or thing to tell them every thought they have, because they lack the ability to think for themselves!

maybe some Jew Brew for the more jewish-inclined, or some Brewddhist, or Hindbrew? I'm just thinking in fully non-denominational terms here. :D
